While Ryan is correct on m ost points he is not quite right about being able to land at your home field. Most Edge 540's are Experimental Exhibition. There is a rather large area around your home airport you are allowed to fly, include land. If you want to go outside that area you have to notify, just notify not get permission your local FSDO. Most Edge owners fax their FSDO where they plan to go for the year, contests, airshows, etc. supplemental faxes are sent if they need to go somewhere different. All that said, I doubt you can use the Exhibition category for a fat/ 2 seat ultralight. It is used for airshow, competition, warbirds, etc. I don't know Ryan but his posts do tend to come across gruff at times. His advice in this area is sound in my opinion. I would not buy an unregistered 3 seater. Also, get with your local EAA chapter and find someone familiar with the type of plane you want to buy and take them with you to look at a plane. As much as you would be careful buying a used built up 40% airplane, you should be even more careful buying something built by an amateur that you are going to put your butt in. Just as there are awesome model builders, there are awesome homebuilders. You just have to be careful. Get help when getting ready to buy. Dan

Somehow I have a feeling it doesn't matter what I or anyone else says to Gremlin on this matter anyway.

I think this thread is titled who flys ultralights not who wants to argue and bicker over a stupid issue about needing an N number for 2 place aircraft. Come on guys

It's not a stupid issue Robert. 3Dreaming brings up a good point that can save the original poster from pissing away 15 grand, with the all-too-expected reactions from the uninformed or simply ignorant. I'm trying my best to bring up the actual regulations involved but it's hard to fix stupid. Do as you wish but don't expect your life insurance to pay off when you auger in flying an illegal aircraft. And try not to share the skies with me if you operate against the regulations.

NO kidding! Thanks... We're not swinging pee pee's about hours of pilot in command here.... first off, 5000 hours and you are 28? Doable, but I would love to see your logs. But that is not the issue, the issue is I want to know some answers and REAL LIFE experience from those who FLY(not read about) ultra lights and LSA 2 place as you put it. You have tried to read me the riot act, but you have failed to tell me how many hours you have in YOUR ultra light! Now, as I said, get the hell out of my damn thread .... please. I beg you.....

Gremlin I've flown an Challenger II and they are great flying planes and have owned an MXL single which was a fat ultralight and loved it. You do need to be carefull about purchasing one without fully understanding the ultralight 103 rules and the LSA rules, they have changed significantly. Personally the rules suck for the ultralight people but the sport license is pretty good deal. Only if the FAA would up the weight restrictions for ultralights, that would be great.

Reading the last 6 pages leaves me with a serious question, one that I have been unable to find an answer to despite how many people I ask or try to describe the equation. If you put an airplane on a treadmill, will it fly? ![]() Lighten up guys, we all share a common passion here...aviation. There is no need to start comparing resumes. I know who Ryan used to work for, and he must have been slacking to only have 5000 tt .So just keep in mind that there is something we can learn from everyone we meet. I've learned quite a bit about Light Sport Aircraft from this thread, thanks to all who have contributed. And... oh yea...Flyings Dangerous |

Guys, sorry about that , but there was a LOT of Hot headed posting right there. Please if you need to, push the key board away, and breath. This is a cool thread so I'm not shutting it down, but can we wrangle it back in and make it about ultra lights! And to quote a close personal friend: "Can't we all just get along?"

Well it sure got faster to read through!!! ROFL Thanks Sleepy! LOL So now for my next question. Do you now need a pilots license to operate an ultra-light or a two-seat ultra-light that has an N number and certificate?
