I think we will be seeing some 3D from Mike Goulian soon as well. The Extra 300 SHP is lighter, more powerful, has larger tail surfaces, and a more rearward CG. He says he want to explore slower speeds.

Im surprised i didnt see Matt mentioned yet.

At the New Garden Airshow this past June, which i think is his home airport, Matt took off RIGHT into a CLIMBING rolling harrier. Insane is an understatement.

He started rolling before he was a wingspan length off the ground, and climbed up like 200 feet, and also turned to the right 90 degrees. One of the coolest things i've seen yet.

If you are wondering why Extra 300 SHP has such features, see this text:

Quote:
The design was a collaborative effort between Extra and Goulian which began last September. The motivation was to move manned aerobatic potential towards current capabilities in the RC aircraft world - expanding the low speed envelope. RC aircraft achieve their immpressive performance through a combination of high thrust-to-weight (often 2.5-1) ratio and large control surfaces. A similar philosophy was used to guide the 300 SHP development.
Mike Goulian rocks! BAD-ASS!

I was thinking for a long time about when 3D aerobatics will be a trend in full scale aviation like it is in RC. And now I see that I haven't been alone with this!

That is awesome. I was hoping they would follow the rc trend. You could see, in some of the pilots flights (like Chapman) that they were attempting to do 3d type maneuvers but the aircraft were not quite capable of it. Now that the aircraft designers are on board with the pilots there will be some incredible stuff to come.

I'd like to see Matt Chap pop in here and say a little about flying 3D full scale...
Having talked to some of these guys, its not a matter of if the airplane will do it, or do it well, its a matter if they can keep it from over heating. Post stall flight really heats up their cylinder temps pretty rapidily. smooth directional airflow is a must for those big HP aerobats...

The New Garden Airshow was the best air show I have ever seen because of Matts rolling harrier and a pilot with a sukoi doing a wall right after take of and then powering out of it.
