thanks Ernie will use the right one - was trying as I have 5 of these other resistors leftover from another project was just the thought of not wasting - will go with the recommended one 10ohm 10w - thanks again

PS; i tried to start without load - no luck so i do need the resistors!!

I need to make a run to Radio Shack and get two of the 1 ohm resistors. I'm at 12.2 with a 10 ohm and want to see if it will change.

Cracky,

Grab (2) 1 ohm 10watt resistors and put them on seperate red and black leads. That took mine up to 12.61v

I don't think that I kept any extra red leads.....I'll see what they do in series first (hopefully over 12.5) then to do two taps if its not. I have no reason why I want over 12.5 other than "huh, I wonder if I can get it over 12.5".

So don't use the single 10 ohm and leave 4 red and black wires( 2 red and 2 black)? Does fry electronics sell and power supplies that are similar to the one Mike uses?

Indeed they do.
As far as what ohm and how many resistors to use...just grab a couple and try different combinations to see what works best for your particular power supply as they are all a little different. It seems fairly consistent that 1 ohm 10 watt give the best results, so grab a couple of those and try them in series, on separate 5v leads etc...

This is a great great thread. I just built my first power supply and works great. The only question I have is, when a power supply says +12v at 14Amp, does that mean it can only supply a total of 14 amps on the 12v rail? I thought it worked per yellow black connection, in other words if there were 3 yellow and 3 black wires, I could have 12 v and 14 amps per pair... I believe this is wrong, but, wanted to double check.

Once again, great help here in these forums.

Thanks

It means that there is only 14 Amps total. Unless there are separate rails, you have to split the amperage between the rails...
