Yeah I pulled the backhoe out the other day and flattened out a 50 foot section with a thin layer of sand. I'll spread some seed around this week. We'll see how bad the horses dig it up but it should be good enough to land on. I was using it the way it was (really rough) with all my foamies and never had a problem so I'm hoping this little improvement will be good enough for this plane. I really dont know how good it needs to be for a larger balsa plane. I've never landed a plane with wheel pants so I guess I'll find out soon enough. Its like a field in a school yard after a rugby game. What do you think?

I know I've met you somewhere before Highlights. My wife says you look familiar also. Where was it you were guiding? My wife worked at Painters lodge for 8 years or so, and my parents ran Sonora Lodge for 10. Was it either of those? Anyway, back to the plane building!!

Bob

Well I finished the ailerons tonight. Alot more work than the 3mm Depron that I'm used too!! Not that they were hard to do. In fact it was super easy, just a few hours work. The ailerons also have some carbon along the trailing edge, I was really surprised how stiff they turned out. Here are some pics...

Time to cover this bird! I have only covered one other balsa plane and it was a solid color so this is going to be a big learning process for me. I found this paint scheme that I think I'm going to try. Hopefully it isnt someones plane here, I am hopeless at paint schemes so I have to kinda copy something. It looks really tough but I'll giver a shot. What does everyone think? Too hard for a second covering job?

How does everyone match the paint for the plastic cowl to the covering? Just guessing? Also I'm wondering what to paint the canopy with? Omg sorry for all the questions...

The only thing I DON'T like about SA kits is that they build so fast and easy... no Challenge!

Great Build thread. Super job on the pics. And keep asking questions, cuz I wanna know the answers! As far as covering and painting questions, I'm gonna lure my bud the Flyin Woodbutcher to this thread. He has a hard-on for super-light Edges and I'd kinda like to hear his spin on things. He does some beautimous work!

Hey Kent... wudaya say?

Bob dude, you get that feild of yours panned out and I will make a drive up with a couple big gas birds. Weird to think though that I would consider driving that far without the path leading to some water. LOL. I have done a little work on Painters itself. When the place burned down , my family was part of the restoration project in the early 90's. Since then I only visit. I have never guided there before. I look familiar probably only due to looking like every other guide out there. It gets into your blood and it becomes inevitable. You look like one or you don't. Never know though. The place is not that big. We may have crossed paths before. Build thread is coming along. Have fun covering. Be interesting to see how you do considering this is your second build.

Git er done!

Highlights

PS Bob, now that I come to think of it. Because you guys are involved in the fishing industry , you may have seen me on a few magazine covers over the years. Been on around 10 or 12 over the years. BC outdoors , STS, Fly rod and reel etc. Who knows. Maybe not. But then again maybe so.

Cheers .

Many, many planes have paid the price (and still do) while learning to do stuff like that. LOL!! Hell, thats what they are for!!

That little edge looks great BTW!

Ok peeps, heres the gig. My son god bless his soul brought the damn FLU home from school!! I woke up this morning at 5am with every joint in my body on fire. That means no building tonight. I some how forgot about the wheel pants so I started them this morning but just couldnt do anymore. The wife convinced me to do a easier covering scheme so heres the new colors. This is the Edge that comes on the SA Edge manual. I'll be inverting the colors so the plane will be pearl blue with a white leading edge. Maybe blue/white strip on the bottom of the wing. I'm not sure how to do the curvature of the covering on the leading edge, but I'll figure it out the hard way as always!

Slow Huck that is a totally sick flame job youve got. Thanks for the pic.

Highlights, Yeah its very possible I seen you on a magazine cover, I was an engineer on a transport ship for 6 years and did alot of reading. Anytime your in the area your more than invited to stop by.

Jaybird, your not allowed to come anywhere near my Edge! Haha, J/k. I'd love to see how this thing is supposed to fly.

Yak at you boyz soon. Peace.

Bob

Ahhh yes, wheel pants. To me they finish the plane. So many guys leave them off for good reason. I would rather risk damage than to fly a plane without them. They are looking good.
Hope your feeling better soon. Must have been the same thing we had down here at the bottom of the island. My wife and son are always dragging something home from kinderjym.

Thanks for the invite, we'll have to hook up somwhere down the road.
