Are you guys using a separate BEC for this plane? Spektrum flyers, which rx are you using? I'm wondering if the AR6100 is safe for this plane.

Dantley, You generally have to run a seperate BEC since most ESC are not designed to power the reciever/servos if they are over 4s. Some ESC can, but you have to check the specs.

On my 4S Yak i had to run a seperate BEC. On my 10S Yak, I just use a completely seperate Lion battery.

Castle Creations just came out with one here:

No. We're running the new Extreme Flight AirBoss 80 amp brushless controller with an integral switching BEC that is good up to 5S Li-Poly, and has plenty of amp headroom to run 5 digitals (Hitec 5245's). Very easy setup - just plug in and fly.

Scott - that is what I bought from 3Dhobbyshop. Glad to hear I don't need anything else!

Ed - I forgot I used a seperate BEC in my Yak. I think I have a spare that I'll use in another EP plane.

Does anyone know where to get 3DH planes in Canada? I'm torn between a Fliton AJ Extra and this plane. Unfortunately I cant find anywhere in Canada to get either. Great build thread. Any plane that Scott Stoops had anything to do with has got to be good. Peace.

Bob

AR7000 is what Ben has been using. AR6200 should be fine, but 6100 is probably too small.

The AirBoss Elite 80A esc that I've been using has a switching BEC, so you don't need a separate BEC. But if the esc you're planning on using does not have one, then you'd need one ... (or an RX pack).

Thanks for the compliment guys . We fly and crash for your viewing pleasure .

Bob, I have both, and both are great flyers. AJX probably KE a bit easier because it has a relatively large side area, though both are relatively coupling-free. The 55 SHP is an absolute 3D monster with insane pitch authority (though NOT pitch sensitive like short-coupled planes). It will allow you to do certain maneuvers that you probably haven't seen before. If you look at the end of the last video, I did an inverted wall at 1/2 - 3/4 throttle while the plane was going 30-40 mph. Not only did it came to a dead stop, the plane actually went a good 45-60 degrees beyond vertical. The CF spar is also so strong, that you can do full WOT blenders regularly without worry about damage to the plane.

Call Ben at 3DH's number 1 830 990 6978. I think he ships to Canada. He's closed monday, but opens again Tuesday.

... On a sad note, my first SHP went in from dumb-thumb / lost orientation as I was flying her into the sun doing an 8 pt roll in the opposite direction of my comfort zone . On a good note, I immediately called Ben and got myself the blue version, put it together, and got some good footages with my lovely wife filming it. Hopefully I can get another video up and running soon.
