I was being sarcastic Shawn. . . .

I do, however, make it a point to memorize and fly all the sequences and have no real need for a scribe. At a big contest like the Nats it helps, perhaps, but usually it's not necessary to have a scribe.

Basic thru Unlimited you need a scribe. The pilot deserves 100% of your attention. I'm baffled as to why you would be so critical of other people's judging when you admit that you take your eyes off the airplane 10 times a sequence to write down a score. IMO you seem to be contradicting yourself.

Don't ask me about spins.. I zero'd my first one of the season.. The other judge gave me an 8 1/2. That means I did real well screwing up.

ahem. . I take my eyes off the plane twice during the sequence, and once after the sequence ends to write down the scores. I find dead spots with level lines, then just write down the scores as they occured since the last time I wrote them down. It takes about 1 second, and since I do not need a call sheet for the manuvers, it's very easy to do. Anyone can train themselves to be able to do it. It's really very simple to learn.

Most people can remember 2-3 numbers in a sequence very easily. I memorize VIN's on cars in two blocks of alpha-numeric code, in order to copy them onto the work orders. Depending on the year, a vin can be about 16 characters.

You may not agree with the technique, which is fine. I'm just copying what Kirk Gray (and a lot of other people) did in Pattern when he judged, and most IMAC judges in the SE handle the lack of a scribe very well. Our Regionals last year had 2 judges per line, and no scribes, even for the Unknowns.

Perhaps you should forward a URP to the IMAC BOD concerning the need for mandating that scribes be in attendance with the judges during every judged round. That would be one way to make sure this glaring shortcoming is addressed. In the meantime, it's not hardly the problem ou think it is.

BTW. . .in an impressive show of Aresti memorization ability, I once was having dinner with Wayne Matthews, Andy Kane, Ron Storer, and a couple of other people. Andy and Wayne were talking about the Unlimited Unknown for the next morning, which they had received only an hour before. Andy wanted to know if Wayne liked the sequence, and Wayne started rattling off the finer points of how the manuvers worked together. Andy asked if Wayne already had it memorized, having only looked it over a couple of times, and Wayne then proceeded to run through the entire sequence, with no Aresti in front of him, manuver by manuver, in perfect order and description through the entire sequence. THAT was impressive!!

It's easy to learn to do, you just have to want to do so.

Funny thing is that people automatically assume that the zero was the wrong score. In my experience it is usually the guy who scored you that screwed up. Accept the present and move along!!

I still see this answer as a contradiction. Sure you may be able to remember the scores in order and keep the deductions for the manuvers being flown in your head as well but my reply has to be " WHY ". Scribes are not difficult to find. In the SW the CD puts together a matrix of judges and scribes. In privious posts you seem genuinly concerned about the quality of judging we have yet are disregarding a tool that we have available to improve judging quality. Not to mention that if we use some of the lower classes pilots as scribes it is a great learning tool for them.
