You will need to be invited by Dave Johnson to fly in the Freestyle. The Freestyle and Invitational classes are entirely at Dave's discretion. You will want to get on the IMAC contest circuit and do well to show that you have the skills to be considered for the Shootout. Also doing well in some of the Freestyle events that are out there.

You will need great skills in IMAC flying too, as all the pilots in the Freestyle are also flying in the Shootout in the precision classes (Unlimited and Invitational classes this year). So best bet for the future is to get yourself on the contest circuit and making it into the Shootout in the precision classes. From there anything is a possibilty if you have the skills.

Anna Wood

Maybe it is a regional thing or just in the circle of people I fly with, but I think maybe it will soon be time to consider the Freestyle on its own merits. NOT Require FreeStyle flyers to also be flying the sequences.
In my little mind, the TAS could become a HUGE event if the Freestyle was Emphasized... At least... LOOK at the number of spectators during a sequence verses during a Free..... There are so many ways to go with the Free....
I bet this event could be made into a big money maker if the Free became as important to the organisers as it is to the spectators....

OK OK OK!!!! I didn't say this to start a fight or have people tell me why I am wrong!!!
Just my limited observation from people I see and talk to....
Incidentally.. I have begun to document ARESTI Symbols for the various 3D maneuvers.... But that is another topic.

And besides.... THis is a DA gig... and more power to DA and Dave for the level of emphasis they currently place on the FreeStyle!!!!

In the upcoming 2007 season I may be taking part in organizing a couple of contests here in Norcal. My thoughs are to bring back a freestyle contest along with the IMAC. The difference is that I would have the Freestyle a stand alone event, one would not have to be entered in the IMAC in order to enter the free. Any comments/ideas are welcome.

Thats a cool idea. I bet the freestyle will go over great. Are you going to have any requirements as far as the type of aircraft that is allowed to fly freestyle? There are some really wicked giant 3d aircraft that don't qualify as IMAC or pattern.

Shawn and I have talked about this whole freestyle thing to quite and extent, and I think our first idea is the best for getting freestyle back into the IMAC circuit.

Freestyle would be a stand alone event for anyone to enter, BUT...it would be required for unlimited pilots. To get started with this whole thing, the freestyle would be a small percentage of your overall score, and you would be graded on a pass/fail basis. This means that if you show up with music, fly a freestyle (doesnt have to low and dangerous) but at least show that you put some effort into it, you get your points. If you fly around in circles for 4 mintues showing no creativity, you dont get any points and your overall score in the contest suffers.

Just an idea. I think anyone in unlmited can do some sort of freestyle. It would make the contest a little more lively for spectators.

Mith,

One thing to keep in mind is that the freestyle is supposed to be a combination of 3d type figures mixed with precision flying. Look at QQ's TAS performance and you will see that a good part of it was in fact precision flying.

I like the idea, but I think also that the planes used should be IMAC legal.
And I also think that if there is only so many spots for planes to compete in the freestyle portion of the contest, that the IMAC competitors should have first shot at competing.......
Plus for Shawn and Zak who live in norcal,...why don't we northern guys have more contest to go too locally.meaning Northern Cal. Thanks

Chuck

You and I are on the same page!!!

How about this for an idea....

Each pilot is given a list of five 3D'ish stunts, and a sound track...
They put together their own sequence of maybe 30 stunts, or 4 minutes
incorporating those five stunts as they wish. And like sequence flying, precision is
still required... sloppy flying is downgraded...

Also.. how about a known free/3D Sequence... remember the 3D aresti I was working on??? And then everyone can be judged doing the same sequence of 3D/free stunts....

And of course a full on Freestyle of the pilots choice of music and maneuvers...

There is just a lot of opportunity here and it does appeal to people more then watching normal sequences....

just an idea... thats all.....
