Default New guy has plane question

Hi guys.

I've flown on and off for about 8 years in the SoCal area and I think I'd like to try to compete in IMAC but don't know a whole lot about it.

I can do a bunch of reading and catch up to where I need to be to start practicing but I'd like to get a couple planes to compete with. I have a Brison 2.8 and a BME 50 but need planes. I had a Lanier Edge with a 3W85 which I liked but got rid of a while back for financial reasons. So I'm pretty much sold on Edge540's. I have a Yellow Aircraft Sukhoi and Wildhare Extra right now but I'm just not sure those are the planes I want to get serious with. I really want to stick with the Edges....

Does anyone have a suggestion of couple brands of Edge540's I can use these motors in to compete with?

Or guide me if I'm on the wrong track?

TIA.

Ron

Hey Ron, if you already have a WH Extra, I would stick that 50 on it and go for it. Go to www.mini-iac.com for most of your IMAC questions. There are bunches of guys in your area that fly IMAC so it shouldn't be to hard to find some help

Rondog,

Check out the PAU 30% Edge!! It is a proven design and provides a great platform for precision or 3D. I have been flying one for a couple of years and just love it!!

Check out the 43% PAU Edge build thread in the manufacturers support forum here on FG. It just took top spot in three different IMAC classes at the Twin Falls, ID IMAC this last weekend! (the 43% is a direct scale-up of the smaller 30% er).

Here are links to the thread and PAU's website!

Good luck!

The most important thing about IMAC is practice.

You'll hear folks talk about Yak,Extra, Sukhoi's etc etc etc fly better than edges and all that. But if you don't like the look of the plane or don't have that particular plane you fly what you have!

Watch the Videos here on FG on the basic sequence. Read the aresti catalog so you understand what the figures are and what they are called. Try flying 2 or 3 of them at a time until you can string them together. Then add a couple more until you have the whole sequence down. Fly in the wind (because contests always seem to have some wind). Try to find some folks who fly IMAC or Pattern that can help you.

I'm not sure of 50cc edges.....I know PAU has one.

Any aerobatic Plane can do IMAC. Infact any plane can go to unlimited. Are some more forgiving or do certain manuevers better than others.......sure. Setup and practice are key though.

Thanks guys! Great advice!

Thinking about it, I SHOULD probably fly what I have, as learning may turn them into sacraficial lambs.

;-)

Thanks again for the help and insight.

Ron.

No extra points in IMAC for flying low! Keep it at a 1-2 mistake level and about 100-200yds out and your be fine.

DO NOT get an Edge for IMAC practice. You'll have to work way to hard and trick out too many mixes to do well in IMAC with an Edge. Extra, Yak, Giles, Sukhoi, Velox, you bet, but not an Edge.

It takes an extremely skilled flyer to win a precision meet with an Edge. They are superb 3D platforms but I wouldn't be trying to get started in IMAC with one.

My Aeroworks Edge flys IMAC well. Granted, I don't compete in IMAC, but I know enough about it. Snaps are crisp and stop on a dime, spins are just as nice. Any problem associated with an Edge is BS in my opinion. Kindda like the "cap snap" that we've all heard about.

However, with this being said, my Edge needs mixing, whereas many of todays planes fly pretty darn awesome from the box.

my .02 worth....
