That would be correct. It was a totally impossible head on collision. The two planes hit wing to wing, right next to the fuse, just barely missing a nose to nose. What was really wierd was, one wing from each plane was found one on top of the other, each wing having no damage whatsoever. The two motors were found about 200 yrds. apart, reletively unscathed, and all the electronics, cans, servos - major stuff was found except one battery. Dick was right, it was a spectacular. The evening sun was shining from behind against a very black clouded backdrop when it happened and everybody just starred in disbelief as all the glittery debri slowly floated to the ground.

Greetings everyone,

The Polar Bear was a great success due to the "stick-with-it ness" of the many talented pilots who flew. I want to recognize and to personally thank each of you who worked so hard to make this "true" Polar Bear happen. We are an addicted bunch for sure. Saturday we awoke to 2 inches of snow. We have an exclusive freestyle by Kyle to prove it! You would have needed to be there to completely appreciate how "off the hook" it was.

Later we managed between snow, hail and more snow and ice to actually hack a round out. Saturday afternoon we tragically laid two beautiful planes to rest. Darrin's gorgeous Dalton and my and soon to have been Matt's Aviation Model Yak 54 met head on then instaneously turned to gold and every other color of the rainbow spectrum! It was horribly sorrowful but yet unbelievably spectacular to see. It was like the physical bodies of the planes flew into an entirely different time dimension. One instant they were both there, larger than life, and the next instant.....CRACK.... and there was nothing but confetti spread over what seemed like "the foothills of hades." There were bits and pieces everywhere. Later that night we burned the only surviving fuselage parts as the Vikings did many years before. This right of passage served to honor our warrior planes and send them off on their final jorney, to the boneyards of our regrets!

Bill and Harv and Jerry.... you guys rock! Thanks for driving down. You guys fly like "top gun" pilots. Thank you for putting up with us. Can't wait till our next contest.

Devin congratulations on your "ice breakin" wins this competition. I am glad we got to be your first IMAC contest. You not only fly well, but you have the best of both worlds, a supportive wife and beautiful kids. We had allot of fun. Thank you for coming up here.

Brandon, I am so Proud of you. Great flying pal! Keep practicing, I see many accomplishments to come in your future.

Rick, Jack, Michael and the rest of the Olympia club, my hat is off to you! Thank you all for being such gracious hosts. You are first class and we could not have pulled this contest off without you. Big Kudos everyone...

Keith and Bill, awesome Steak dinner, thank you. They say the way to a mans heart is through their stomach, and you two will have a place in my heart forever. That was a great dinner!!!

Everyone of you flew responsibly and safely, thank you. You all are "the real deal."

Twenty pilots signed up and only two, due to technical difficulties, did not finish Sunday. Warren's plane took some damage landing and Kieth could not get his plane to fly reliably so they dropped. All in all I believe this contest was a hard fought for weekend and for those who turned out, thank you, you made it all fun and amusing.

We got the unknowns in Sunday morning to breaks in the clouds and sun, to snow again in the afternoon for the last round. What a persevering and determined bunch..... We had some nice fires in the snow this Polar Bear....we were definitely "chillin."

Thank you all for a great time!

Mike Raines

Mike, thanks for one unforggetable day of flying, even with that one regrettable midair. It was great!! Considering the weather, I thought you did a fantastic job of getting the round(s) in. Sorry I was not there on Sunday.

Darrin, thanks for the lone of your Dalton for that one round on Saturday. I had some previous choices for best loner that people have been so gracious to allow me to fly in the past, but I must say that your Dalton has my vote now for the best. That was one sweet flying plane, and I was really stunned and saddened to see it go.

That demo flight by Kyle with Mike's, err Matt's, Yak over snow was an unforgettable experience. I am so sorry to see that plane go also. It was obviously a very capable plane. I would love to have a copy of the video of that flight.

Warren

Thank you Warren for your kind words. I am sorry for your mishap. Are you going to be able to fix your plane? It was a Polar experience, for sure. Glad you made it out and I look forward to flying with you soon. What will be the next contest you'll be able to fly at? On the bright side, most everything except air frames was salvageable. That in itself is a quite a blessing, considering the condition of the planes body's. Darrin and I will be okay. This is just part of the risk we all take, every time we hit the air, or in this case, each other in the air! Our greatest concern is taking care of Matt. This was most tragic for him. We will however, figure something out in the near future that will be suitable for him. Next time I buy a plane from Darrin, I am going to insist he remove the homing beacon from the plane! Ha! Hey, life is good, nobody got injured this weekend, except for Darrin, who took a hard whack from his prop. The wood broke on his finger.... oouch. He is okay, but I would imagine his hand hurts today. All in all... great contest, nice people, good food and a most beautiful field to fly off.

I have your 2nd place trophy too Warren. I'll give it to you when I see you, or send me your address and I'll mail it.

Mike..Great job/weekend. I would like to thank all involved who made this weekend happen. I know there's a ton of work involved and you managed to complete the weekend, despite the Record BREAKING weather conditions we all dealt with, but we all kept our heads up high. We are a determined bunch.

I hope most of you guys can make a trip up to our Flying facility in Surrey BC (RCFCBC) "Radio Control Flying Club of British Columbia".. I would like to have at least one Imac event here each year. This year I'm hosting 2 events, but the first event is Restricted Basic,Sports,Inter. Second event is in September.

The Drive from my door to the field in Olympia took me 4 hours. The google mapsays 3 hours, but then you have to deal with traffic through Seattle area and the border crossings ( BorderLine). Early in the morning or later at night would most likely be the best time to make the trip. RCFCBC is a nice facility 600"x 100" Grass runway and Tons of room for dry camping.

Again.. We Canadain Pilots would like thank you all for making this a very enjoyable weekend and accepting us with open arms. EHH

Cheers Jerry

PS..How long of a drive is Medford past Olympia??

3 hours to Salem, then another 230 miles @ 60mph = almost 4 more hours, so yeah at most 7 hours driving past Olympia or 11 hours total from "your door".
