Well presented "Old Dawg".....Really old Dawg he is and he is a wise one. It determines the regional champs and does not have anything to do with the TAS. Nice Trophies and prizes for those who happen to win their class in the region. We are really blessed here in the SW region in that we can pretty much fly year round, unlike some of the north eastern regions.....Snow,ice, ball freezing temps!! ****...lets fly.

If you look at the IMAC contest calender the TAS has everything to do with it. We start contests in January and have a full calendar until July 31. After that we have almost nothing. Why? Because that's when the TAS points close. So the schedule for IMAC is driven by the TAS like it or not. Considering that this years sequences came out in October of last year it will be over a year flying the same sequences by the time the regionals are held if in Nov/Dec. Also with new sequences out in October of this year I would rather fly some tasty new sequences and move on from the same old same old. Another factor is the younger members as well as families - we should be able to run a season calander that doesn't use up a whole year and then some. By the end of the summer the youngsters need to get back to school, dad has burned up his vacation time and then the holidays are upon us. I think we should end on a high note with the regionals held before the TAS so they are fun and accessible to all who would like to participate. Labor Day, the last big holiday of summer, seems appropriate to me as a target for regionals. |

For all of those interested in attending this contest, I just got off the phone with Bernie Boland who is the CD for this event. The Southwest Regional Contest is going to be a 3 day contest held on the weekend of Thanksgiving. There will be a flyer coming out very soon with all the details on it. Just wanted to give everyone a heads up to make plans. Good luck to all the SW Pilots flying at the TAS!! |

Hey this is Darren Kuhn. I am from the nw region. My wife Cheri and I are hopefully moving down to the sw region for the purpose of better weather and for IMAC. My question is where is the best place to live in the sw in regards to making all the sw contests without too much driving. It appears most of your contests are in CA. If that is true what part of CA would be most centrally located for the IMAC contests? If you as an IMAC pilot in the sw region could move to any city you wanted where would you move to? Thanks |

Blythe CA would be the best. This would be in the middle of San Diego, LA, Bakersfield, Las Vegas, St George, Phoenix, and Tucson. We were confirming the AZ contest schedule today. Jan at EVA, Feb at Mesa ama field, March at Sun Valley, April Tucson. 2010 is going to be a good year.

It really depends on a few factors.... Is weather a concern? Do you need to work? if so what line of work? Do you want to practice with other IMAC flyers? Do you like having access to local hobby shops? What other entertainment activities do you want available to you? If IMAC is the only concern and nothing else matters, then I'd get a nice RV and experience all the different cities. Pedro. |

Darren, The two major contest areas (this from a first year newbie) are Phoenix-Tuscon and Southern California (San Diego-Santa Maria). From either area, the other area's contests are a 5-8 hour drive. There are several Northern California contests as well (within 2 hours or so of San Francisco) and a strong group of IMAC'ers that made most of the SW contests. For me, Southern California is hard to beat. We live in San Juan Capistrano and are within easy reach of 4 or 5 contests (1-3 hour drive). Temps are great year round, and we basicly live where millions go to vacation. The IMAC group here is a little spread out, but we made a number of new friends from the area at contests this year. Phoenix and Tuscon are great areas, too. Housing is cheaper, but their summer temps get up there. The IMAC crew from that area is first class. I never made it to Colorado or New Mexico, and it seems that there are fewer contests in those areas. Haven't mentioned Vegas, but that would be another area that normally is close to a few contests and is within reasonable drives to the California or Arizona contests. There are major differences among the SW metro areas in housing costs, weather and available activities. You'll need to do some research (and maybe a trial trip or two) to see what works for you. Hope this ramble is of some help! Bill |
