Ken,

The break has to be with the elevator to stall the wing. (more simulated than anything with models though)
Rudder never does anything but Yaw the aircraft.

Does that work in a Knife to Knife snap, when the wing already isn't flying?

Ken,
I might be wrong but, I don't think the wing knows if it is in knife edge.
It, the wing, is still flying through the mass of air regardless of it's orientation to the horizon.
Maybe some aeronautical engineer can chime in here.

You're probably right here John, but I thought in knife edge, it would be your fuse that's flying, not the wing. I'm probably wrong, just a thought, though.

Here's my theory, if the wing is perpendicular to the horizon, it's not producing lift...only the fuse is producing lift...of course, I've been wrong on many of occasions, this could be another of those...

Ken,
I think we have hijacked Ryans thread about his first contest. It, the contest sounds like it was a success and I hope he plans a second annual.

Maybe Baron or George Hicks can jump in here and correct us but, i think we are confusing lift and flying relative to the ground. i think when a plane is in knife edge, the wing is still flying but to keep the plane lifting away from the ground, we have to induce yaw to keep from rekitting the plane. Make sense?

lift is always perpendicular to the wing.
A good example of this is roll to 45 degrees and pull a loop. The loop will corkscrew because of the lift vector is at 45 degrees.

No doubt on the hijack, sorry Ryan...I owe you one dude!!!

Let's get this discussion going elsewhere, maybe in the aerodynamic section.

Ryan, Excellent contest. Also thanks for crawdad 101.

Phil, Thanks again for the hospitality. Stop by Del Rio on your next El Paso run.

I think techniques for eating crawfish have changed. I don't know anyone that sucks the heads anymore. You get nothing but water. You actually have to insert your finger and scrape the top inside of the head with your finger to get at the good stuff.

If the plane is flying in knife edge, isnt the wing not lifting anyways, so you can't stall the wing with rudder???

Flame suit on heheheh

BTW, HAD A BLAST... Phil, Ryan and all the local basic pilots and supporters, great contest, we made the best of it saturday and thoroughly enjoyed it!
