Any you Giants bro's like the old pattern ships? I've been dabbling a bit. Taking a break from IMAC for a season. I'm moving to Florida in 51 days where the Ballistic Pattern Association is taking off. Can't wait... got a Troublemaker, a Tiger Tail 3, a Dirty Birdy (kit), a Cutlass (kit) and a Deception being built. Hey, I figure any precision flying can only make me better right? Can't be all bad, JAS is doing it! But hey, shhhh... nobody can know I fly anything but big gassers... shhh Lets start a quiet, off the main drag thread here. |

Looks like a blast. I haven't flown one of those demons for years. But, the downside is glow fuel. Yuck. I learned how to fly with my Dad's New Orleanean on a buddy box (powered by the unbeatable Webra black head). That was my trainer. I flew pattern in the 90's, but these old rocket sleds were gone by then. Now, since I missed pattern flying, I bought an electric 2m ship and am getting ready for the '08 season. Just not a BPA or SPA ship, but pattern flying is awesome. Have Fun!! Steve |

This is way cool. I hope to get a couple of old rocket sleds going this year. I have a Phoenix 5 and a Phoenix 7 framed up and just about ready for paint. Of course theyve been that way for 5 ro 6 years now. BTW, these rocket sleds and the ones mentioned in the original post were from the 70's not the 80's. Hope to make it to a Ballistic Pattern event. OMG are the Desire and Mistress vintage pattern ships? I cant be that old! The Desire was an early 90's design anyway. Too new. |

A couple of years ago I flew a LA-2 to the D4 Sportsman Championship, very smooth flying bird, wish I still had it.

OK, Dave. I will play. Back in the day, I owned a couple of Dirty Birdies. The first was an all wood model that I purchased. It was resin covered and painted. Heavy as a sled. I stripped it with a razor plane and smoothed it back out. I recovered it in mica film and repainted it. I removed about a pound from it. I still have fond memories of that ship (may it rest in pieces in that tree). I liked it so much I ended up getting one of the glass and foam kits and building it up with trike retracts and a newer power plant. I eventually moved into a Supra Fly EZ kit modeled after a Hanno Prettner bird. Smoooooooth. I still am thinking about refilling those holes in my hangar.
