Hello, I am going to be travelling to New York, NY in a couple of days. I am wondering if anyone can tell me of any good RC shops that are there or close by. This is my first trip there and looking forward to checking out the sites. Thanks Anthony

I Googled "New York Hobby Shops" and came up with 10 on the map. You'll have to sort out the dolls and crafts establishments but there are some. Used to be one called "Polks" ......... It was a mecca for stuff and neat old stories. Don't know if they are still around. Anybody up there know? WT |

Thanks WangoTango, I did a google as well (before posting). Sounds like I may have came up with the same list you did. I did however, found a place called Bruckner Hobbies. From the info I came up sounds like a place to check out. Still looking for more suggestions.......... Anthony

If, by NY,NY you are referring to Manhattan, and you are relying on public transportation, then you won't find too much available. Rents in Manhattan are just too high for a hobby store to survive. But if by NY,NY you are referring to the 5 boroughs and the surrounding areas of Long Island and Connecticut and New Jersey, all within commuting distance by car, then there are a lot of good shops available. However, most are not large super stores by any means. Bruckner hobby is located in the Bronx, and much of their inventory is centered around RC cars. They also have a shop in Westchester County and they recently closed a store in Rockland County, both in New York State. Try Googling hobby stores in the Tri State area. Hobby House in Wayne NJ on Route 23, has a nice inventory of RC plane arfs and kits, and Linda who runs the shop, is well versed in the hobby and knows her business.

Thanks Dr. Yakem, I am not familiar with the area at all, since I have never been there. I am staying on the west side of Manhattan. I am there for 5 days, so I am hoping to check out a few hobby shops while there. I will try as you suggested.

Oilsands, Bruckner is the best you'll find in the NY metropolitan area. The store in Westchester has more of an emphasis on planes than the one in the Bronx but it is small and stocked with a mix of cars, plastic models, and small/medium planes. The best parts of the place are a very helpful, overworked manager (Felix) and a gregarious owner (Tommy). We moved from Chicago a few years ago where there were a couple big, amazing hobby stores that were overstocked with all manner of RC stuff and served as places for the RC community to congregate - NY hobby shops don't compare. Retail commerce in general in the NY metropolitan area is not very impressive in this era of web based commerce. Phil |
