Honestly, it's all what a pilot likes. Personally, I only use expo to help in high speed rollers( + on Futaba, - on JR, for elevator/rudder) Other than that, I can make do with a basic 4 channel radio. Granted, my 9C and 9303 are great radios. As far as building, there aren't many builders anymore. I enjoy building, but I don't have the time or room to sit down and build a plane anymore, though I'm up for the challenge.(anyone want to see a 55% built in a dorm room?) I did consider building a 40% Laser as well, but I can't build perfect wings with my setup, so it's not even worth taking the time. I'd just as well buy an ARF and bolt it together. I do have a Goldberg/Comet Sailplane and a Berkley B-26 waiting to be finished if it counts for anything........ 50% |

Yeah, stupid technology, I wish I was around for the days when there were no cell phones, you had to hand crank your old car in the snow, no radio or gps/satellite.. Anyway, if someone can fly, they can fly anything basically, its hand eye coordination that makes 3D pilots rawk. So whats wrong with using a TRIM button to TRIM your plane? Your paying for those mixes, why not use them? Granted, on a telemaster with big flaps, doing an excruciating flight of touch and go's, you probably dont..

People still build? why would you want to do that with all the beautiful Arfs out there? My time is worth too much to spend it glueing my fingers together. haha

You're supposed to glue the sticks together, not your fingers. Derr

Flip this concept around and ask if there would be as many good fliers as there are if we didn't have today's electronic technology. I would guess not and would also bet there'd be larger point gaps in IMAC scores than what we often see. Flying skills would be more diverse and less compacted together. Yes, the "aliens" can fly anything but how many of the rest of us can consistently hold heading while making a decent roll on an untrimmed & unmixed plane? Not many. I build my own planes and fly what I build (old school) but I'll also use every piece of technology available to help me fly straighter and better. That's the only way I see for us older guys to keep up with younger eyes and fearless fingers. |

frealess fingers, or their dads buying them more toys when stuff happens.. haha... On the imac part about having to fly the plane with no mixing, that probably would see a difference Im guessing.

Some valid points. I would also say that when I started flying rc in 1980 we would not have considered putting this much money in a plane because the radio equipment and servos were not nearly as reliable as they are now. Nearly every weekend someone would lose a plane to radio problems. Now we doubt anyone that claims radio problems. Dan

I would add one more point. How many of you old "builder fly a 6 channel with no trims guys" were invited to the Tuscon Shootout this year??? In my short experience in this hobby I haven't met many old guys doing 3D or freestyle at that level. Not saying there may not be one or two, but they aren't really burning up the skies at my field. How about you Blog+1??? You flying unlimited freestyle this year??

Al, Some might find it surprising, but when attending a full on 3D event the number of hard 3d flyers over 45-50 is amazing. Good ones at that. Agreed, those that have grown up with video and computer games as their primary early past times are better, but a lot of those "old" guys are pretty good. An IMAC or Pattern contest would truly separate the new from the old if mix radios were eliminated. Hard for everyone, but the older guys that did their own building had a lot of practice flying without mixes, rates, or expo. They had to tweak the plane, not the radio, requiring a lot of "feel" and understanding of the airframe and control relationships. The excess power wasn't there as well. Don't get me wrong, the new days are better than the old and I certainly don't want to go back! |
