I am right with you on that, just wish I had time to build, maybe in retirement

It aint the radio. There's not a radio out there that will make me a better pilot. Wish there was. Maybe a military grade UAV with auto pilot !! Pre-programmed flight patterns.

Maybe a super flyin' plane and a little expo could make me "appear" to be a smoother flyer (to the untrained eye) but I wouldn't be.

Hello Mike - If your old Kraft 5 ch was the one with the heavy metal open gimbal sticks, I bet you'd just love to put it in your today plane and give it just 1 more go. In fact I have a crazy little project on the go at the moment. I have a Pro Line Competition 6 Tx which I'm about to degut and replace with modern FM 6 ch board - not sure yet if it will work on the Allen Bradley 5 ohm pots, but I'm going to give it a try anyway..

Hey Blog,

Lots of good responses and I agree with most of them. My 12Z has a ton of features, a lot of which I will never use. While it's nice to have all of these options, I rarely use more than a few percent of any P-mix. I'm one of those guys that need all the help I can get

BTW: I've moved this thread from the Builder's area, only because it's really not a build thread, it's more of an informational thread.

And Mike,

How's my plane coming?

I think this whole concept is funny.. the radio technology doesn't matter. My planes don't even get a mix of any sort until I fly the plane 20-30 times for the most part and you would be hard pressed to tell the difference between the day I didn't have a mix and the day I added it.

The mixes help with things straight lines and KE flight... most of the 3D stuff is done on the fly. Sure there is some expo but I can't say I have ever seen someone do a rolling harrier that wasn't in a straight line and say.. hey I need to add this mix to fix the reason why I cant do a rolling harrier in a straight line.

Just like anything else you learn how you plane reacts and correct for it by practice. The "hotshots" are good because they are dedicated. The sim technology is great and if you want to get good you have a tool you can use whenever you like. Add in foamies and more practice and it all comes together.

The difference is that the older generation treats it more as a hobby and social time.. where most of the younger generation I see / talk to is there to fly and do lots of it.

What set me off is an article I read in MAN June edition on how to set up ailerons with differential. It poses the question "What kind of Flyer/ Modeller/ Builder is the modern day hotshot?".
I reckon they are a bunch of technological whiz kids. Take away their Super Computerized Radio equipment with dial up 'do anythings' with built in compensation for when it blows, coughs or sneezes. Put a straight-six ch in their hands. It would be interesting to see if and how they can set up their plane for the effect of the right movements without dual rates.exponential-soft around neutral, aileron differential, mixings and snaps. To achieve this, smart improvision and building techniques kick in.
Flying by hand, eye and seat of pants, on a scale of 1 to 10, what level of flight performance do you reckon can be achieved? Is there a sniff of a challenge here?
Man what an event....

HA! crapolla. Radios don't fly the planes, guys do, besides, those who rely on mixes and the like to get them through a sequence will spend more time fighting the mix for the rest of the flight, than those of us who don't really mix.

Don't get me wrong, I love having that stuff available to me, but I don't lean on my radio to keep me going in a straight line.

I think the setting up and airplane with your radio is an art in itself. I for one, have a very short patience, and really don't spend the time I should in a lot of cases really dialing in the airplane as much as I could. When I was young, my father showed me how to mechanically set up differential, and I still use that as a starting point today. I have a good friend of mine that is not only excellent with the mechanical setup of his airplane, but is a guru when it comes to dialing them in with his radio. Every one of his airplanes that I have flown flys absolutely fantastic. I keep telling myself I am going to put more time in on this new airframe... each and every time... but I rarely have the patience for it! I mix out pitch coupling with the rudder. I tried some downline mixes, and really didnt like them. I actually prefer to fly out the downline if necessary... not sure why, but I do.

Yeah Ryan, you're absolutely right. I can't imagine us flying the same plane. Why's that? Youre right about my vintage.
Because I started flying when I did, when proportional equipment came out, I switched from reed equipment with elevator toggle on the left and ailerons on the right- thats me - Mode 1. You guys are generally Mode 2.
Man, both of us flying the same plane, it's going to be hell for 1 of us. In fact this can be the start of another "Pathetic" thread, you know 'copying the BIG guys with their stick between their legs' rather than getting it right when you have the opportunity...WOW!!

If you want a real test of skills, how about an event using one airplane only that neither of us has flown with a basic radio setup. Sound fair? Just don't invite those "whiz kids" if you want to win, because they will still beat both of us.

I gotta get in this one. when I was young my dad said he didn't need that new stuff like air conditioning in a car. We always drove at night in the desert. Or power steering or brakes because only men drive cars. Or the airline pilot that doesn't need all that stuff in front of him, he'll just follow the road. On and on and on.
This thread is Pathetic. Dennis
