I couldn't help noticing that in Builders Forum, there are just 8 threads. What set me off is an article I read in MAN June edition on how to set up ailerons with differential. It poses the question "What kind of Flyer/ Modeller/ Builder is the modern day hotshot?". I reckon they are a bunch of technological whiz kids. Take away their Super Computerized Radio equipment with dial up 'do anythings' with built in compensation for when it blows, coughs or sneezes. Put a straight-six ch in their hands. It would be interesting to see if and how they can set up their plane for the effect of the right movements without dual rates.exponential-soft around neutral, aileron differential, mixings and snaps. To achieve this, smart improvision and building techniques kick in. Flying by hand, eye and seat of pants, on a scale of 1 to 10, what level of flight performance do you reckon can be achieved? Is there a sniff of a challenge here? Man what an event.... |

You can definately tell new school from old school at my field. Plane is out of trim new guy trims it with the radio, old school guy gives the linkages a few turns. Not that theres anything wrong with either method for the average sport flyer, just a product of learning to fly during different times.

I tend to believe that if you are a hot shot with a computer radio you'd still be a hot shot even if the best radio available was a 6 channel with no mixes.

I agree. Nothing wrong with technology and advancements to make things easier. Its the old argument you'd hear from you grandparents... "Back in my day" Blah bah blah...

I have a young friend who I get to have fly my 35%er now and then. With all my mixes (12z) I can do lots a tricks from about 30' up. He turns off all the mixes, has me turn it to all high rates. And procedes to do everything below 30'. Those young fellers just have extraordinary hand eye co-ordination. He can also dial in the radio to his liking in about 2.5 minutes.

I've watched the alien fly for a few years and he couldn't care less about mixes. He'll fly the wings off of anything. Just hand him your control and turn him loose.

Yeah but if everyone flew Yaks it would mean that I would be flying a Yak and I would have to shoot myself in the head if that ever happened. I completely agree with the posters that say the guys who fly great now would also fly great if their radio was more limited. Whether you are turning pushrods or dialing in radio buttons, trimming is trimming and the better pilots will know what they need to do to get the most out of their airplanes. Then again if it makes you feel better to think that the better pilots out there are only better than you because they push buttons on their radios and not because they truly have skills, then go ahead and keep on thinking that.

Radios have not made better flyers. I do feel that simulators, foamies, and big ARFS have made better pilots. All of these things make flying on the deck and learning new things much easier and less costly in time and money. Dan
