just watch the video again. the plane was forced by the engine to
turn to the croud right after the fall safe turned on.
there was no mistake by the pilot.
it was an accident...

The saddest words are "if" and "maybe" after a thing like this so its pointless using them. My heart goes out to all the victims of this terrible random event including the pilot.

That is really sad. I wish I could understand what they were saying in that video.

BTW-What is the "failsafe"? and could anyone describe exactly what happened?

It looks to me like this could have been prevented.

1. The flight line was much much to close to the spectators, if not above them.
2. Failsafe should be set, especially at an event like this, to slow the plane down as much as possible, as fast as possible. This is done by killing engine and setting elevator full up and rudder full over (3D throws if possible) and possibly full aileron, but not necessary. This way the airplane will loose majority of its flying speed very quickly and will fall to earth in a spinning fassion.

Obviously failsafe on this plane, if even set, was set DEAD wrong, sorry to be so blunt.

Yes, it was an accident, but I still think who ever was in charge of this arrangement are to blame and secondarily the pilot.

The pilot shares in the responsibility because he failed to program the failsafe to make the engine kill itself. It was under a significant amount of engine power when it went into the crowd. I am sure that a 32" prop spinning at 5,000+ RPM had something to do with the injuries/deaths that the plane caused

Many are assuming there was fail-safe available on the model. There are plenty of 30% and "larger" planes that don't use PCM receivers or the new PPM with fail-safe options.

I know there are options of fail-safe technology without using PCM.

Eh, I really would hope that a "German Champ Pilot" would use a system WITH some kind of failsafe when flying a 55 lb fire breathing Pitts 12, especially when flying it at a show with many spectators.

If he did not, one can blame the organizers for not demanding that such a system be used, but I certainly would hope that he would decide on such a system of his own free will.

I don't disagree Jens,

I use PCM in all of my larger planes and any small ones of value. I've watched that video several times, and I can't see where any surfaces went into any kind of fail safe condition, unless he had them set to normal.

All speculation on my part, obviously, my stomach sinks every time I think about this accident.
