What is Memorial Day?? When did it start?? Why do we care?? A few answers. . .Memorial Day originally started as an observance of the sacrifices of the Civil War. It became common to put flowers on the graves of the fallen Civil War soldiers, at least in the North, though the South had their own customs about this. It became an actual "holiday" sometime in the 1870's, with an actual Order for it's observance, on May 30th, from an Army General. After WW1, the South joined the North in observing this day of remembrance for all soldiers who died in ANY of this Countries wars. There are many traditions that have developed for it, from the wearing of red poppy's to putting flags or candles on tombstones, to the Holdiay Parade, to recognition by the President at the tomb of the Unknown Soldier. There are over 4 MILLION reasons to recognize this day, as that is the number of US servicemen and women who have died in all our countries wars, or while wearing the countries uniform. So, today, I think it fitting that we take a moment and remember. . remember those who have fallen .. remember those who have served . .remember those who are active and fighting for our Country and our Freedom in far away places. . .remem ber where we came from, and how much blood, honor, dedication, and death it has taken to get us where we are today. To my brothers, I Salute you To those who have served. . my undying thanks. To those who carry the wounds and troubles and have bled for your country, I am honored by your sacrifices and dedication. And, to the Fallen, I can only pledge that you will be remembered, that what you gave your life for will be preserved, and that the Oath you took I shall follow in your place. I think we all need to . . .remember.
