I like Saturday better. I did this last year at a couple of contest and everyone seemed to enjoy it more. It seemed when it was on Sunday everyone was packing up and just in a hurry to get it over with so they could get going. There is no way we should even consider doing away with the freestyle, for a long list of reasons that has already been pionted out in this thread. My 2 cents.. |

How's that trophie Tim? As a CD I prefer and will always have a freestyle. At our contest we have it scheduled for Saturday night wrapped around a big dinner because A: it creates a fun "air show" atmosphere for the public and contestants. B: this is a money maker portion of our event (Hey its a Capitialist society). Due to the show like atmosphere we sell a lot of meals and concessions during the freestlye. c: Too many ppl want to leave earlier on Sunday for their long drive. d: I like it this way The last two years we have gotten 3 rounds + a freestyle/dinner on Saturday and 1 unknown one known on Sunday. The key is to keep it all rolling, plans in the air before the current one lands, 3 deep waiting, judges posted..... 8:30am start... This year at Hamilton we will do the same, maybe only 2 years due to volume of contestants. We are adding some more new fun this year............... Is the suspense killing you????? Don't miss it, it will be worth it. Ric

"I also think that most IMAC pilots don't know what Freestyle is. It is NOT a 4 minute 3D exibition. I would suggest everyone read the rules book and see what the criteria is for a good Freestyle. Not only pilots but judges also!" Very true statement, thank you John. A really thought out and choreographed freestyle as per the Rules is truly beautiful to watch, a work of art in motion, and a joy to judge. Fred Johnson | ||||||||||||||||||

just my 2 cents..freestlye is needed primarily to let the pilots unwind. judging criteria should be for well balanced performance displaying all aspects of the aircraft and the pilots capability, however i truly feel that the judges should be the pilots that are present and not a panel . as pilots we are the best judges of our peers and can show our appreciation to each other by saying"man that was great...,smooth ....daring" without having to worry about ' how many points i need'..face it 3d or freestyle is for the guys to have fun......outlaw pops

The I hope that CD's continue to include freestyle as a part of their contest's. More so, I hope the pilots start to open up a little more on entering the freestyle. At some contest's there will be 50-60 pilots and 2-3 sign up for the freestyle. It seems like alot of people are afraid to risk there competition airplane and some are also intimidated. One of the best idea's that I've seen that alway's causes a good turn out is what John started with the bay city contest. Having a seperate trophy available to those who enter both the precision and freestyle portions. The intermediate and unlimited freestyle classes also seem to take out some of the intimidation aspect and increase the number of pilots. Fred hit the nail on the head, you don't have to risk your airplane by flying 4 minutes of 3D. That should be scored lower than a well rounded freestyle anyways. -Kelly |

we need to just make freestyle a % of your final score for the upper classes. someone mention that to me last week why dont we do that. If we did A. fewer people would probably compete and B. maybe no time.

Those of us that like it can really only help to spread it by flying it in every contest we can. I know that I always feel more comfortable doing it with a larger group of participants. It's all about fun! Noone can deny that.

I like freestyle on Sat nights...like we did at Prattville. ![]() I think most people who are concerned about losing a plane in freestyle usually don't fly freestyle even on Sunday. ![]() (additional .02 cents...for free) Most of us drive long distances to get to a contest and it drives me bannanas when we don't start flying until 9am or after then we quit flying by 5pm when there's at least 3 more hours of daylight. Give me a break! We're there to fly! Do I look like I need more BBQ???? |
