Default YS-140 Prop for pattern

Hey guys,

i have an old style 2m pattern ship that weighs 9.5lbs. The plane is called Piorun Olympian Medal and is outfitted with a YS-140 Sport. I started with a 15x12 prop and found it wasn't developing enough thrust to maintain vertical flight. i am asking if anyone has any suggestions for a good prop for this motor to weight ratio.

Regards,
Forrest

Wow, I'm using a YS-140L and APC 15 x 12 Wide on a 10 lb. Evolution and half throttle goes straight up like a rocket. . .
.
.
What fuel are you using? You may want to find out if something is wrong with your engine setup if that motor can't take 9.5 lbs. straight up out of sight. .

16.5X12W APC, Powermaster 20/20, OS F plug. 30% Heli fuel even better!
Enjoy,

An Oly is a clean airplane too. You should be putting out about as much power as a 1.40L.

Is the motor broken in? I would look into maybe an APC 16x11, you'll need either a YS plug or the OS 'F', they're both exactly the same plug. Also the more nitro you can get, the better your motor will perform. I use S&W 30% heli, however Coolpower 30% heli is a little more commercially available.

Good luck!

I use the 20/20 Powermaster but since you all are saying the 30/30 heli fuel is good i might need to look into getting me some.

The motor has about 10 tanks through it and i have already changed the glow plug twice. i had one deadstick at idle (that was a close call) and we have been slowly leaning the motor out but once we adjusted the low speed it messed it all up and we started over with factory settings.

A friend of ours let us try a 15x8 apc prop and found that it had tons more power than with the 15x12.

And i use O.S. F glow plugs.

thanks for the help

15x12w is a pretty good prop for the 140 sport. I used that on my Typhoon 2+2 and was running 8950rpm with it on Coolpower 30 heli. The 16x10 was a little big for the typhoon (ground clearance) but it turned good too. And, yes, when in doubt, email Troy. :-)

Hi, a guy at our field runs a 15 X12 APC on his 140L, pulls a 11lb Caprise for ever. I have the YS 120 in a 9 lb model on a 15 X 10 APC, tested it at the field the other day with a guy who flies the master schedule F3a, he was gob smacked, 5 vertical snaps and still going!!! Yamada 20% nitro, Os F type plug with a hatori short pipe. Got to be something up with your motor?! Are you running in to lean. You should tach them to no more than 9000RPM on the ground, so they do appear to be running rich, but by god do they pull once up there.

Cheers

Andy

WOW!!! An Olympian Medal that weighs 9.5lbs. I have built two of them, and have one kit left to build. I had 5 kits total. Every one of them had heavy fuse's. The lightest fuse I had was 2 1/4 lbs. I sold one of my kits to Cass Underwood a few years ago. He ended up selling it also. Is this the same plane? Just curious. Post some pics. Here are the two that I built. One had an O.S. 1.40 RX, and the other had a Mintor 1.70. Both had great verticle and were heavier than your plane.

I am currently flying a 10lb 14 oz. USA Star with a Y.S. 1.40 FZ. The prop is a 15x11 and works great. I run PowerMaster 30% DZ blend fuel.

Well we have tried the 15x8 apc prop and we tached it at a little above 9000rpms. with this prop the plane has enough power to vertical but with the 15x12 prop it could hardly gain enough altitude for most vertical maneuvers. We are gonna give the 30% heli fuel a try and this weekend at the Harvest, AL AMA pattern contest we will let someone more familiar with this motor to take a look at it.

thanks again for the help.

I bought the plane about a month ago from Ed Deaver from Lubbock, TX. I don't know if he is the orginal owner but he did crash the plane and had the wings redone by a guy in, i believe, Amarillo, TX. Ed did fixed the fuse back to normal and added cheek cowls and took the retracts out. So far i love the plane, Archy Stafford flew the plane and added a little mixing with the elevator. Besides the engine and a little slop in the horizontal stab she flies great.

oh if your wondering about that dent in the side of our car in the picture. Of all the cars in our lane, the only 6 point buck in a 50 mile radius had to run into ours.
