Hi Gang, well we finally made it to our first pattern meet! Man it was a blast, and alot of fun to fly a new discipline, and stay in the box for a change. Met alot of folks, and really appreciated all of the help, and support, we'll be back for more, and as Imac flyers, pattern will consistently help us in better defining our skills in precision.Another highlight was flying Mike Hester's brand new Black Magic VF3, prototype for the first time, after Jimbo Woodard flew her, Stephen, and i did for a turn and it was simply Killer! We flew Jimbo's Aggressors, which are Pattern assains.. at the contest .....perfectly trimmed machines;now if we could fly as good as these planes !Man...look out!The future is very bright folks, no matter what ride, or discipline you fly..It's all about Flight time. Team Black Magic is poised for some serious time in the Winners Circle.Man we're very excited to be part of Team Black Magic!Heads up....cause dragons are coming to your local contest soon.

Radioactive: I saw my first 'pattern' contest at Ocala last week, and was really impressed by how the 'pattern' models presented during their sequences. They looked qualitatively (in some way) better than larger IMAC models. Don't get me wrong, but there's a clear difference, even if I can't put words to it. I'm not selling my IMAC plane yet! My question involves flying both disciplines. Are they really complimentary, with one improving my flying in the other? With the cost factor, I can't see myself investing in a pattern model if it gets in the way of IMAC competition. I see the Shulmans do both, but they are from a different planet than me.... Docvan |

DocVan, yes they both compliement each other. No one is selling their imac birds from here, we love precision period, thus pattern. As you saw it wasn't easy to fly in our uusal format,, careful throttle mangement as to not eat up alot of unnecessary airspace etc is mandatory, also a clear, and precise geometry presentation is required... this should sound all very familiar to you. So you'll be the judge, i predict imac scores to climb with this cross training. We had alot of fun, there are alot of pattern planes out there.. hang around the contest circuit, pick the pilots brains, and do what you can afford only... we're doing both, it's all about getting better, so my friend jump into something, and stick with it... and grow with it... ps.. if it means working extra to equip another fleet then so be it, you can only live once, We're very fortunate to have Jim Woodard, and Team Black Magic as our Coaches... great folks.. order yourself a Black Magic VF3 kit, and build it.. you be very happy, We have two on the way.....If it's Flight...we're there BROTHER!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Docvan, I've written in the K-Factor and posted some other thoughts regarding doing both IMAC and Pattern competitions. I fly IMAC Advanced and Pattern FAI. I am looking to move to Unlimited for 2008. Both compliment each other in a seriously positive way. IMAC has taught me the finger-gymnastics necessary to perform combination snap with opposite point rolls, and also the rolling circle maneuvers. Pattern teaches a level of concentration, positioning, smoothness, attention-to-detail, and that would blow you away. The way to get "the most" out of flying both disciplines is to pratice IMAC and Pattern sequences with their respective equipment and rule-sets. However, it seems to stand that if you apply the pattern-principles to IMAC, it will not harm you. Where as if you apply some of the IMAC-principles to Pattern (like some family of maneuvers do not require all radii to be equal), it can harm your score. Class to class, the IMAC sequenes are more difficult and require a higher level of stick-skill to get through the sequence. However each competitor group is equally skilled per class - meaining that while the pattern sequence may be "easier" you need to fly it BETTER to keep up with the round winners. On paper the IMAC sequences are more difficult, but when you apply the "rule" set (like box lines and positioning in the pattern sequences) they even out quickly in terms of difficulty and competition. If you enjoy competition, I believe you will enjoy each the same unless your really don't like the way all the planes look the same in IMAC (just kidding as I know that is a typical "hit" against the pattern planes.). Growing up pattern allowed me to enter IMAC Advanced needing to learn about the equipment, unknowns, snap/point-roll combinations, and rolling circles like mentioned above. Practicing IMAC allowed me to re-enter pattern with an other than laughable rolling circle Judges can now watch it without "tearing or falling off their chairs", needing to mark N.O.... If you did both, I think you would go to the contest of convienence - meaining why drive 16 hrs to an IMAC contest if there is a pattern contest 4 hrs away. Each are similar with District champs and such. Anyway - tons to tell and discuss. I'l be glad to answer more questions too. Don/Stephen - my pleasure to help you get practiced up for and through your first contest. Recently I've also let John S. and Alan C. fly the pattern ship. I've got the Mike Hester's new VF3 pattern plane to finish trimming out and try the "anhedral" stab this weekend Thanks, Jim W. PS - when making the switch - I find I need about two weekends to get "honed" in on the pattern plane, and about 1 weekend is enough to get back in the groove with my Dalton 260.

Jim: Thanks for the detailed response. It all makes good sense to me. I think the pattern planes 'present' in a different, but attractive way. The sound level at Ocala wouldn't make too many people unhappy. And the rules seem to keep the models smaller, if not affordable. Composites are going to cost no matter what..... The idea of staying with 'glow' also appeals a bit. I'm getting used to gas, but I miss the smell of glow fuel. I need to read up on the rules for pattern. Is there a central place where I can read or download them? Docvan |

Hi Docvan, Too bad we didn't meet up at the Ocala contest. If you don't mind a little balsa dust or don't mind paying someone to build, please see www.customairframes.com Mike Hester is the owner and a sponsor of mine. We just flew his newest "VF3" plane at the Ocala contest. There is an EXTENSIVE thread on RCU in the pattern forum regarding his kits and the new plane. The V2.2 kit of his, and now the VF3 are incredible flying machines - the build thread will speak to the happiness of the customer base. Anyway- check it out. The new kit is laser-cut and designed to frame the fuselage in a week with alignment tabs and such. Again, the build thread will speak to this much better than I can in a short post here. On Day 1 and Day 2 of flying several pilots and FAI guys flew a bunch of snaps, rolling circles, Rolling S, and other F07 maneuver and the plane ate-it-up!!!!!!!!!! I recommend and fly YS. However, there is the OS 160 or possibly one of the small-newer-gas motors to fly if you wanted to go that route. Thanks, Jim

Was this with the V2 or V3? I was thinking about ording a V2 kit to build over the 07/08 winter but I think I'll hold out for the V3.
