| Bad-ass Super Contributer! ![]() | How do you deal with putting a tuned pipe on a one piece wing plane ? In this case I am talking about the Chip Hyde Otop. The wing attaches from underneath, so unless I was to leave the wing on all the time, is there some sort of quick coupling that would de-couple the pipe from the header every time I take the wing off ? Second- any general thoughts coments on this plane? Is it worth investing some time and money into? It flies decent so far. Needs a tad of down thrust thats easy to do, but it also needs right thrust and that is not easy to do with the solid mounted rail mount engine. Would have to modify the front and put a flat firewall with a Hyde mount or something. |

| Flyin' Around ![]() | I have used the plastic tie method, another one is the Dave Brown pipe mount. It has a lord (rubber isolation) mount, a nylon pipe seat, and a rubber 0-ring. Takes about one second to put on or remove the pipe and allows movement when using a soft mount. I am a strong believer in the Hyde mount. I even tore up the engine mounting beams of my Icepoint to install a Hyde mount and nose ring. Makes everything last longer. However, my final solution is going electric. After flying smaller (Brio 10 and QuietStorm) electrics for two years, I was shocked at the mess and vibration when I flew my glow pattern ship a few weeks ago. This eliminates both of your problems . No pipe and no need for fancy anti-vibration mounts. Hope this helps, Don |

| Gettin' Lower! ![]() | Depending on how you do the mount setup. You can make a plywood plate that spans the rear wing mounting bolts and acts like a big washer or support plate for the bolts. The tuned pipe mount will attached to this and then when you bolt the main wing in place the wing bolts will hold the plate on on the wing. You remove the wing bolts and slide the wing out the rear of the opening, then put the bolts back in place to hold the pipe mount to the fuse. This prevents the pipe from flopping around when transporting it. The Dave Brown Hush clamp pipe mount is also another option. Replacement O-rings can be purchased at Ace Hardware or similar old timey hardware store. Either method will do you well. If you are using a 4 stroke the long muffler is not a tuned pipe and only a muffler, but I say this as it will get really hot. YS exhaust gas temps can reach upward of 700degs F. So you need to pad the plastic pipe mounts with some aerotrend silicone tubing. Just cut a piece and slice it open this will act as a barrier between the pipe and the plastic mount. For the model you are trying to put it in...I don't know that you need to go with a pipe setup.... What engine are you going to use. If its a YS 110 or the likes I would recommend running the stock muffler. It will be less hassle all around. The pipe setups on the 4 strokes can be a bit of a pain in the rear if you don't know your way around them...and there are a few options. On the 2 stroke setups, depending on your motor choice again there could be an option to just use a stock muffler or go with an actual tuned pipe. Most of the pattern setups today even running 2 strokes are detuned even though they are on a tuned pipe and the pipe is making it quiet but not really helping performance.
