I'm a sailplane pilot and I've NEVER been in the closet about it. All I fly are sailplanes, sailplanes and a few more sailplanes. Smallest one I currently have is a "Thermal Thing" @ 72 inch span up to a Paragon at 3 meters. Seanpcola can tell you that I"m a pure junkie when it comes to sailplanes. I left the hobby for about 17-18 years but got back into it when I moved to Georgia. Back in California I flew at Torrey Pines as well as a lot of inland thermal and slope near my house. Well no slope near me now but the thermal flying skills are getting better with each flight. Current hanger has: Thermal Thing 72 inch HL HOB Two-TEE Gentle Lady 2 meter Spectra 2 meter EP Riser 100 Paragon 3 meter (stock) Paragon 3 meter EP Jester 2 meter (needs building) Windfree (highly modified) Klingberg 100 wing (needs building) W.A.S.P. MkI (home brewed design) Designed for thermal "Combat" flying W.A.S.P. MkII (Upgraded home brewed design) Next project is a 1/3 scale Zogling primary glider trainer. 131 inch span |

There is nothing like flying w/o power and have the ability to keep it up. These are just some of the sailplanes I've had my way with.

Where are you flying in the PS area (gliders that is)? Do you fly power at Coachella Valley RC Club?? Attached are a couple of snaps of my Sharon and the bulk of the Team Futaba Soaring guys. I'm the one in the middle, with the orange airplane!!!

Yeah- I'm a member out at CVRC Club- actually a lot more active "in season" when the temps like engines a bit more. lol! If you've been there within the last few months and seen a punk kid (at 33 years, I guess I'm a wannabe kid...) flying a WH Sukhoi in the honda scheme, that's me. As far as "local" flying out in the desert, There's some slim pickins' right there.... There is a group that flies at "The church" as everyone calls it on sturdays, but officially, it's the overflow parking lot (all grass) for Southwest community church on the corner (or close to it) of Washington street and Fred Waring dr. Mostly electric, but I have brought a winch out there once with no friction from the crowd. It's funny- D.U.S.T. holds a charter for that field, and if you remember, we were the club (also a member of dust so to speak) that had the polo fields in the early '90's in indio. Every now and then, you can rub elbows with Buzz Waltz, and Hobie Alter, among others on saturdays. Mostly IMHO, it's fizzling out though. sad... I have been recently flying slope at Little Mountain in san bernadino, and just for the heck of it, I'll post a link to a fun fly that's being held out there next sunday- It's basically set up for a retro feel- like coming back to the '70's or something- Coyote's Oly's, Hobie Hawks, etc- anything unobtanium, or built up and vintage is welcome, and it is also set up as a kind of swap meet if people wanna sell anything- I'll post a link in a few- BTW, Have we met?

Maidened my Reichard Champion today All went well, even got into some strong lift and scored a 20min flight off a 20sec motor run. I'm using a turnigy 3542C on 4S turning a 12x5 aeronaut, which draws 45Amps at WOT. This gives a very impressive climb rate. At the moment it feels quite nose heavy on the factory CG setting. Going to remove some of the nose weight and try again tomorrow if the weather is good.

Put two more flights on the Champion today I made a CG adjustment, added some more aileron differential, and added a aileron to rudder mix. The changes worked well and it goes where it is told and doesn't skid around in thermal turns. CG is spot on now and the model indicates lift quite well. Only problem I have now is it wants to climb once you start picking up speed. I think this maybe related to the decalage angle. I haven't got an incidence meter to I may just try a small adjustment and see how it goes. Other than that this thing flies beautifully. Both flight I had today where 30min plus on one 15-20sec motor run. Which gets me to approx 600-700 feet. Lift conditions today where great, blue skies, light winds and I guess because the ground is so dry and bare it's making a super heat pad. I also installed my altimeter logger from hobby city, which works very well. My max recorded altitude's were 1239ft on flight 1 and 1343ft on flight two. Here's a few pics of the beast.
