Kite Hill is still active and open to the public. It is at the intersection of Alicia Parkway and Aliso Creek Road.

Kite hill is fine for light floaters, but don't expect to fly anything with real slope performance there.

There is another site just up the road off Highlands called Lilly Chapelle park. It requires a permit and special access. It is behind the gates of a private community.

I started flying that slope back in 93 or so with Brian McClean (designer of the Vindicator slope racer). Had to hike in off Highlands, but no homes yet and it was a blast. The LZ is tight now, no combat is allowed, and it is not what it once was. But it is still a decent place to fly. You just have to jump through more hoops now.

I use to spend countless hours there after class. I remember no combat. The guy that lives in the corner house right behind the picnic tables use to be a real prick. I wonder if he still lives there. There were incidents where gliders had landed in his back yard and he would not give them back. I heard once he stepped on a guys plane too. BOOOOO! Like a few years back that site was on the news too. The broadcasters really gave the slope guys a bad wrap. They said these planes can exceed a wingspan of yada yada.. and can really hurt someone if it hits them. I have flown with the guy that designed the vindicator I think. Man the lift there is awesome! Cant wait to get at it again!

He is gone. He sued a few of the club members, lost and left town with his tail between his legs. Not sure who lives there now or what the relationship is with the homeowners these days.

Just make contact with the folks listed on the website I sent you. They will give you the full scoop.

Video! Re: Soarin off Alicia Parkway in Laguna Niguel?

An update to this old thread. The website is still the same:

http://www.ci.laguna-niguel.ca.us/%5Cindex.asp?NID=210

The park is named Lilly Shapell park, assuming this is the wife of Mr Shapell, since it's he's the builder (S&S homes) of the homes surrounding this public park. The housing tract is gated, but the park inside is a public park, and there is a guard to allow people into the park, which is open from sunrise to sunset. In addition to flying gliders, there is a hiking trail, and the grassy area is also used as a small park for dogs. The official name of the glider club there is Laguna Niguel Slope Soaring Guild.

When I fly composite models there, I land on the slope near the ridge, which is covered in somewhat soft small shrubs. There's also a grass landing area, but the usually damp grass has a tendency to snag the nose of composite models, and the fast stop puts uneeded stress on the wings. The other issue is the grass landing area is paralell to the ridge, so you fly through a potential rotor zone. If you're flying a foamie (I have a DAW 1-26), the grass landing area is not a problem, as long as there are no people or dogs on the grass.

I made a video back in 2000 or 2001 with my DAW 1-26, actual video size is 640x480, which is what you'll see if you left click on the "right click here" link (or you can right click to download, my website has unlimited bandwidth so no worries):

I have two more videos of gliders there that I haven't uploaded to my web site yet and will post these later.
