I'm a huge believer in starting with a heli that has counter-rotating blades. This really helps pilots be much more successful because they get used to orientation of the heli in a hover. There are a ton of good choices out there. Global Hobby has some of the lowest prices right now.. I think they've got a Mash themed heli for $139 or so. Buy one and fly it. Sell it later for your upgrade. They are so popular that you really won't loose a ton if you keep it in good shape.

You you want to take a stab at a traditional collective heli, for $199, the Axe CP isn't a bad ship. I'd avoid most of the ESKY stuff. I've worked at a hobby shop where 1/2 of that stuff comes back defective.

Horizon is also releasing an updated version of the blade CP which looks to be a good setup. The CP Pro would be difficult to learn with since it is geared for higher-performance.

For indoor hovering a blade cx is a great starter heli. I'm not a fan of collective pitch micros smaller than the trex 450 or mini titan. The never seem to fly well. Avoid anything with a motor on the tail.

just avoid helis all together. any aircraft where the wing always has to fly faster than the fus is unsafe
stay away from the dark side Luke.

While I agree that the counter rotating rotor helies are good for the extreme basics of flight, you will outgrow it quickly and the entire investment will be lost when you upgrade to a more real heli.

So short term, the cheapo heli is just that, cheapest, but as you throw out the cheap stuff to upgrade later it is the most expensive route in the long run.

As far as which heli is the best of the low cost micros.....
I can't help much since I have not actually owned them.
But I would recommend starting out with a Collective pitch heli with a real heli radio that can still be used as your flet of helies grows.

Save money and don't buy any micro-helis like the Blade CPP...

Get a TREX 450 SA, it's very stable and much easier to learn than the twitchy little micro helis.

If you have no experience flying then a good flight sim will be a big help and also take small steps, don't try to learn too fast, it will be costly.

Check out this link.
