Default PC Power Supply Conversion

I started out in electrics charging my batts using an old car battery and when it would die I would just charge it back up... problem was I had to charge it outside in my 130+degree garage... so I came across some websites that explained how to convert a PC PS to a PS for a 12v DC Charger... I had an old PC PS sitting around and gave it a whirl. The first one I tried didn't come out so well... I was drilling a hole for the on/off switch and got crazy and drilled right into a giant capacitor.

Well it just so happened that my 5 year old computer decided to take a dump on me...and I figured since I'm just going to get another one I used the PS out of it. After a couple days of tinkering with it, it turned out great and I've used it about 20 times to charge up my lipos.

One problem I have is I'm not sure how much amperage it's putting out... it handles my charger at 2amps...so it's good enough for me.

Here are the links I used

And here are a few shots of my PS...

Of course you could always go out and buy a AC-DC converter...but what would be the fun!! HAHA

go get yourself a multimeter to measure amperage... Most chargers like amps of the 10 to 14 amp range @ 12-14 volts. This is the best way to make sure you get the best charge.

I was told if you hook a multimeter up to it your gonna fry something... plus most multimeters on read 10A

I could use the old Ohm's Law formula... but that would take me thinking back 7 years to electronic principals...and yeah that's not gonna work.. It's all good. It puts out 13.01v and how ever many amps.

LMAO... nah it's something like V(Voltage) = I (current, amps) * R (resistance, Ohms) so without all the mumbo jumbo... V=I*R ...

Most PC supplys are good for at least 5 amps at 12 volts. You can find the limit by just stepping the current up until the supply 'crowbars' (shuts down due to heavy current draw, it's way of protecting itself).
