Got some more work done. Built and shaped the horizontal fins, glued the tail assembly into place, installed the bellcrank for the rudder with pushrods, and started shaping the nose section for the TSU.

Bellcrank installed:

Lookin good. I'm still working on your LEDs. It's all coming together - in my head. I've sourced the timer, oscillator and decoder along with the required resistors/caps ect. for the "guns". Now I just need to figure how to make it all work with the landing spot light and navigation lights from the Tx. In all it should come in less than $20 for parts.

Do you guys know if these kits are still available? Did they ever finish the R&D for the Raptor compatible version? I'm sure you are all aware of the desingers passing. I was hoping maybe somebody would continue producing these kits..

Nice work on your model. If you would like to see another build thread go to RCHELIMAG.COM

There are rumours that someone has aquired the rights to the kits, not sure who though.

It looks like the wood construction part of it was well thought out. I remember seeing the thread about the designer and his tragic passing.

I am new to the scale heli stuff, I have done a little, one Jet ranger on a MX400 lexan cheapie, and am currently on a Raptor 90 TT MD500 Defender. I am very curious as to how the wood framed scaler is going to hold up. The TT MD500 is glass, and everything I try to do to it, well , you have one shot at getting the holes right for anything. And if I built it myself I could hide wiring more easily, etc....

Keep up the detailed photos of the build, even if you don't post right away, so when you need a break you can caption them , and detail out what you are doing later. This is great.

I will do the same with my MD on another thread here on the Giants. I am currently working out a flipped over tail for tail on the left, scale style. It just wouldn't be right to have it on the left.

Nice work....and as far as lights....go to Vario's site. and look up the "rotating" beacon. It is a 4 led beacon for on top, it switches in rotation, and looks like a rotating beacon....slick.

I am doing a infrared imaging sensor , with motion , on my MD..RED leds for illusion.

The MD sounds cool, I'll find the thread and check it out. As for the wood fuse holding up, aside from the fact this will be electric I gotta figure that if a wood airplane airfram can hold up to a beating from a 150cc engine then I shouldn't have any problems with this! I think I'm going to glass it when its finished anyway to give it a good surface to paint.

The other thing with the wood kit is that I know if I screw something up I can go back and fix it easily!

Small update, I sanded the nose down to its final shape. Armed with as many reference photographs as I could get my hands on I started roughing out a scratchbuilt TSU as the one that comes with the kit is very basic. This new one will have the optics behind the lense on the left side (the right side has an opaque cover on it). I'll also scribe in the hatches on the side, put in the rivet detail, and add the cable deflector on the front. I haven't decided if it will move as it will require some serious modification to the nose to make it work.

I am taking an Arrow servo, , a tiny foamy servo, and making a cam for it, modifying it so it turns slowly all the time, so my IR sensor in front oscillates back and forth slowly all the time. It gets turned on with the lights.

Wood is good....yup, being able to correct something or modify it later is easier than glass.

....

I am searching toy isles in every BigBox store in the area. Youname it, I have been in it's toy isle...looking for.....ACTION FIGURES. Gotta have a good gunner on the side.

I have a bunch of pics of my MD already, but when I can put together something co-hesive, I will. What strikes me about it is, it really lookslike the kind of toy used in the early 50's and 60's in the Toho Godzilla monster movies.

It looks that cheap and cheesy. It's the paint job, it needs weathering and detail, dirt, rightnow it is laughable. I literally laughed at it when I opened the box. It is THAT bad. Like if it had strings on it, you would swear it was right out of a Godzilla movie. Except for it being a modern helicopter, of course. But it really is that cheesy. LOL. THere are some shots of it my gallery naked.
