Pros:
I have been flying everything from park flyers to 35% with a Spektrum DX-7 for a while now. About 100 flights. I am convinced of the technology - it's excellent - very locked in, no freq conflicts, no issues with RF in gassers, great servo resolution - that's my experience.

Cons:
My transmitter failed after 100 flights (roughly.) Just before it failed for good I experienced some slow response in the air but I was able to land. I know of 2 others locally who had them fail very soon after getting them. In one case both the TX and RX batteries were bad, the other was similar to mine where the TX went "funny" and then failed to turn on after that. Luckily no one lost any aircraft - but it is somewhat of a disappointment. Same thing could happen to any radio 72MHz or otherwise...

I am back on 72MHz but I am a 2.4GHz convert. Once modules are available I will switch to one of those and be back on 2.4 for good.

Would you mind explaining it a little more please? Obvioudly on board batteries dying will certainly make a plane sluggish and then inoperable. Are you sure it has any connection to the technology /modulation of the system?

I know a transmitter we used recently was shipped with a battery that started to give out in only 6 months. This isn't really surprising since all nicads have a shelf life. It could have been sitting around for awhile before it was sold and without any attempt to cycle it, it makes sense. The battery would only provide around 15-20 minutes of on time.

I thought this was a great way to focus on 2.4 without slamming anybody. Here are my results and concerns along with my father in-law aka PlanePerfection. We have been flying spectrum DX7 radios in my 30% Yak and his Double Vision for over 3 months without 1 problem. We fly low and slow 3d flight usually at the same time togather. We attended a 3D fly in at Fresno CA and were flying around 6 other DX7 systems and had no problems. We both like the idea of the XPS and have one paid for, just have not received it yet. We just finished up His 40% TOC Yak that has taken him 2 years to finish. The Yak is currently set up with an AR7000 but has not been flown due to all of the confusion on this 2.4 subject. He is waiting until more people come back with flight reports before he risks 8,000 plus $. Even though we have had the spectrums work flawless he is still concerned about which system to use, DX7, XPS, or back to the old 72MHZ. We are not sure if we are having the success with our 50cc planes due to the both of us running the Emcotec unit. We are both concerned about this issue and until it is cleared up the 40 % is grounded.

There are Pics of the AR7000 insatlled in each of these planes in my media

I have been flying Spektrum equipment for over a year on several different models. I started out with a DX6 in my trainer and recently moved up to a DX7 in my Inspire Mini.

A year is long enough to have issues if you are going to have them. The only issue I ever had with reception was when I was pointing the tip of the antenna at the model. Thats bad practice no matter what kind of radio you are flying.

Apart from that is been a smooth ride. I never have issues with installation. Frequency Control and getting shot down are the furthest thing from my mind. I can now count about 3 times that the Model Match feature has saved an airplane for me. I actually lost 2 airplanes with my DX6 because I had the wrong model selected (doh!). Model Match should have been a no briner the second radios got multiple model memory.

Now I'm looking at flying giant scale stuff. For safety reasons I don't think FM is a good idea anymore. I think I made the right choice starting out with 2.4 and its going to stay that way.

I will be recieving a Daton 300 from Tony Russo here in a few weeks and the DX7 will be going in that as well...only until I can get my hands on a the 12X!!

I do have a question though while we are on the topic. The Dalton will have full length Greeves pipes. Anyone know if I should be concerned about mounting the RX's over the pipe tunnel? I plan to mount the satelite RX's in the turtle deck (with the longer extensions) well behind the pipe exits.
My RX sits in the turtle deck on my plane and the remote RX even further behind that. The further back you get both the better it will be.
Heck If i could I would have the RX's in the tail by the stabs.
but in your case i would say to put the secondary on the bottom of the fuse behind the pipes and the main in the turtle deck, that should work best for your case.

87" Yak DA-50 Spektrum....

WOrks great, no thrott curve is my biggest gripe. more spots to plug in extra power leads is a minor gripe.

Nice locked in elevators....no CF prop on plane, no CF gear, no bling vinyl. No glitches/lockout/mushiness.

gp giant ss on fut6ex2.4--first flight with 2.4 on my giant sportster this weekend...same experience as bosshoss--no glitches/lockout/mushiness...low-level knife-edges were much easier to finess...must be the lack of latency compared to the 9chps i used previously...i'm sold on 2.4, and hoping for good reviews on the fut module for my 9chps...ken

I Have 23 flights on my new 40% Carden 260 with the DX-7, and it really feels rock solid.

Okay, I'll play. I am flying the DM9/AR9000 module system from Spektrum. I replaced my DX7 with this unit and have experienced zero problems with either. The module system is quite kick ass, and being able to use 2.4 with a 10x is a godsend. Performance is excellent. The "satellite" rx's work out very well, and the data logger keeps an eye on each flight communications. Not a single glitch or hiccup.

These units will reportedly hit your LHS this weekend, and I've -heard- (do not take that as infallible) delivery has reportedly begun.

I've also had my hands on the Futaba 6, and it's a great base radio, and foundation for the excellent line of TX's that are coming down the pipe... 2007 continues to rock!! Can't wait to see the 12FG and the Futaba modules.

One important thing that we all need to learn about this stuff - there are microprocessors in all of these RX's. With that comes a huge level of caution that must be practiced to adequately get these puppys the juice they need. Hooking a microprocessor based RX to an overloaded BEC will most likely crash your plane. Heavy gage wire, power boxes, etc are absolutely necessary for the bigger stuff as well.

More to come on the Spektrum modules..
