Im anxiously awaiting to hear from the Fanboys who will no doubt say all this means nothing and that bench testing is a waste of time...

Look...the guy has been caught lying. I can understand how some can baffle the masses with the technical stuff, and people might be confused, but now, well, it's out. The guy just lies. He got caught. As far as the system itself goes, it's no better than the cheaper Assan system. But Assan is honest and prudent enough to say it's suitable for parkflyers only. If you don't understand at this point that you are playing with fire if you put it in some big gasser or jet, well...you never will, I guess. It's downright dangerous to be flying this equipment in anything but a park flyer. If you saw that giant twin turbine plane, which was, of all things, a Graupner sponsored demo plane, go out of control and hit a road with cars on it, you would appreciate the danger of this system. The same types of failures keep getting reported...it works until it dosen't. Don't risk life and limb or our hobby by hoping that somehow all is going to turn out fine, or that all these people are just out to get Jim Drew for some reason. |

I think, under this expert definition, the XPS FBs do represent something of a cult. Anyone who has done research into the psychology of cults soon comes to appreciate that in the mind of those who accept the teachings/preachings of the charismatic leader, there is nothing that can challenge of disprove those claims. It also seems strange but more often than not, the more outrageous the claims and promises being made, the stronger the belief. One only has to look at the followers of people such as Jim Jones and Marshall Applewhite to realize that in many cases, otherwise quite normal, intelligent people can so totally deny the facts that they'll take their own lives in the process. I'm not suggesting that JD and the FBs are going to the grave together however, a cult psychology is the only explanation I can suggest for anyone who'd still believe the XPS line after witnessing the facts which prove the deceit. What I really can't explain is why JD doesn't have enough business acumen to realize that all he has to do is come-clean as to what the system is and will do or not do. Draw a line in the sand, re-issue the specifications, offer refunds to anyone who's unhappy with their system and go forward on the basis of honest claims for proven functionality. Perhaps he has backed himself into a deep hole already and realizes that to do this would open XPS up to some pretty nasty law-suits -- so the charade continues, out of necessity. It's been a long time since I've seen such a great opportunity stuffed up this badly.

Whew.. With the proof that the current xps configuration doesn't work as advertised and this flying season coming up.... If there's a class action suite maybe I'll actually get a free receiver in exchange for my jet after all |

Thanks for all your work Kiwi, not easy getting good video and getting it online. I was however hoping that your video would show the XPS locking up and not going into failsafe as you described earlier on. The video shows it losing signal and stopping but not for over two seconds which is the default failsafe time. From your earlier post I thought you said you could get it to stop responding for extended periods without it moving to the failsafe position. I know it was possible with the early XPS firmware (if you tried to reset it) to get it to where the failsafe timeout was set to some huge number like 254 seconds. In that scenario, you could lose signal to the Rx and it would stop responding at all and just sit at the last positions received until 254 seconds passed and then it would go to the programed failsafe positions. In your video the servo would always twitch (get a good packet) at less than two second intervals which will reset the failsafe timer for another 2 seconds which basically makes failsafe useless in a scenario where the occasional good packet gets through. Please understand that I am not questioning your results or defending XPS, just trying to better understand what I'm seeing in the vid and if it is the same result you saw the first time you tried to make the video. In the past, during failsafe testing of my T-rex I saw my XPS system get into a state where both the Rx and module lights were green and there was no control at all until I power cycled the Tx. I had programmed all channels to user defined failsafe and stored them. I then turned off the Tx (motor disconnected!) and it went to failsafe position after 1 second as expected, I turned Tx back on an had immediate control again. Then I tried it again but held the sticks in the upper corners and turned off the Tx, after one second the servos went to their failsafe positions. I released the sticks to neutral and put the pitch to the center as well and flipped the throttle hold switch, the same as the saved failsafe positions (I was just playing around trying to see if I could get them exact so that nothing would twitch when I turned the Tx back on), I turned the Tx back on and the servos moved almost full travel one direction and then back to center and stayed there, I had NO CONTROL. Checked lights on Tx and Rx, both green; power cycled Tx again and control was restored. Hmmm, I repeated this scenario about 20 times and about 1 in every 4 or 5 tries it would do the same thing and lock up. However, it only happened if the sticks were moved to the exact position matching the saved failsafe positions before re-powering the Tx. If I held any stick slightly off center it would come back to life immediately after powering the Tx back on. I tried it enough times to know that made the difference. I also had a few time where one of my planes did something similar, but on initial link up. I would turn on the Tx, throttle stick all the way down, others at neutral, same as when I had saved the failsafe settings. then I would plug in the battery on the plane, servos would move and then center up but then NO CONTROL, light on the Tx was green. It did this to me four time in a row one day, I could not get a good initial link. Then I thought about the experience with my T-rex so I moved the throttle stick up about a 1/4" off of idle and it connected fine the next try. Now, the reason I explained all that is to say that this all occurred with the original Toledo firmware in the Tx module. I have since had everything updated to the latest firmware and I tried the same experiment again last week and after about 15 tries I gave up as I could not replicate the lockup. However, I can also confirm that the current firmware v2.3 does not help with avoiding channel swamping. I powered up my X-10 2.4ghz video camera in the same room with my XDP, Tx and plane and it looked just like your video as I moved the video camera around the room the servos would jump around and occasionally go to failsafe. I power cycled the Rx and Tx and they chose the same channel again and continued to get hit. Only on the third power up of the Tx and Rx did they choose a different channel away from the camera and then it worked fine. Sorry about the long post, just wanted to get this written down while I was thinking about it. Mike Last edited by ylf; 05-01-2008 at 01:39 AM. |
