Thanks very much for posting this. Where I fly it is probsbly not a problem - but I have seen inside the fuse get to 45 or 50c (based on my data recorder.) That is in near freezing conditions outside... so at 40c (105 or so) I can see maybe having an issue. Again - thanks - this is very good to know. How are you planning to solve the probem? Are you going to shroud the Rx's somehow? Get air moving on them? |

I couldn't belive how hot things get in their as well. However, if you are in 100 degree weather, it could be hard to keep the inside cool enough. From taking the cover off in 90 seconds the inside of the airplane went from 85 which is the local temp to 97 degrees. The black items in the plane were 119. We will do some more testing on how hot the RX gets just from operating it on the bench. Last edited by lazun; 04-26-2008 at 12:49 PM. |

Seems like some sort of thermal shielding is in order. Maybe as simple as making sure that the RX is not exposed to direct sunlight. Novel idea, bury it in foam!! Still amazes me how many times I see RXs strapped to the fuse directly with "maybe" one sliver of highly compressed foam between it and the hard place. But getting it out of direct sunlight can't hurt it.

| The RX's are buried in "LOTS OF FOAM". The white heavy duty stuff from Dubro. The RX's are high up in the canopy as suggested by Frank with 90 degree antennas to remedy other issues of blockage, carbon, signal etc. The RX's itself are covered in foam. But it is indeed in the sunlight. If we buried it in the plane we then promote other issues. However, that will be the option for now. This is becoming a real joggling act. So even wrapped in foam the RX is reaching 165 degrees? I thought you said that was the surface temperature on the black case of the RX. Guess I got confused. So where are you measuring the 165 degree temps?

Thank you for this post and information. I do not fly Futaba, and I am not rejoicing in the appearance of them having an issue. OK, that is out of the way. This thread should become a poster board for how the Internet and problem resolution can take place. 1. There appears to have been an issue 2. The people with first hand experience tried to locate the solution and did not resort to shrill rhetoric. The proceeded with a logical approach. 3. The units were sent in for checkout and NPFed (No Problem Found) This was true under the test conditions. 4. Being observant and following a repeatable set of test conditions, the cause of the issue appears to have been found. With this information, the producer can confirm the issue (or not) and proceed to locate the true root cause and resolution. 5. The issue will be solved and everyone will benefit with minimal drama and in short order. Things happen. As complexity increases, the chance for unexpected situations will increase. Looking for solutions, calmly and methodically, always works best. Thank you.

I am having the same problem with my R6014 Receiver. Even here in the North when the receiver is directly under the canopy it can have problems. Funny thing is my 8 channel 2.4 receivers don't have the same problem. Chane

Judge, If the electronics in your brand new car stopped working at 165 degrees and the dealer told you to stop leaving it in the sun, what would your response be? | ||||||||||||||||||

A) Futaba has said no such thing B) I said no such thing C) Explain to me how getting it shielded from the sun is a bad thing? And that is all I said. Getting it out of the sun can't be a bad thing.

Great job guys, if this turns out to be true we owe these guys thanks for discovering it before people lose planes. As expected there will be a learning curve with this new system. Like Judge says, it may end up just being another thing to keep in mind when designing an installation. I'm glad to see that this thread is focusing on the issues, and solutions, not bashing. keep us informed!
