Introduction

Highslide JS       Highslide JS

I was given the opportunity to build a very unique, large scale foamy produced by Mike Morgan at www.DWfoamies.com.
● Design by Pedro Brantuas
● Light carbon wrapped aluminum double taper spar
● "Tab Lock" construction for quick & accurate assembly
● Torque-Rod hinge system on all surfaces
● CNC cut Aircraft Ply motor mounts, hinges and control horns
● CNC cut Depron imported form Depron B.V. in the Netherlands

Out of the Box:

Highslide JS Highslide JS Highslide JS Highslide JS

This large Yak is called the BAF Yak. BAF stands for Big Ass Foamy and man, they werent kidding.  Opening the box, immediately you see the size of this plane. The foam is 9mm Depron and the size of the parts was funny at first when comparing them to all of the other foamies I have built.

Product Specifications

Wing Span: 1410mm (55.5")
Length: 1257mm (49.5")
Wing Area: 705 sq. in
Wing Airfoil: Flat
Flying Weight: 34-38 oz
Radio: Micro servos and micro receiver
Motor: Scorpion 3020-12 Brushless Motor
Controller: 40 Amp Speed Control
Battery 3S-2100 mAh Li-Poly, with a capacity of 20C.

Putting it all together

The plane goes together just like a smaller foamy with the exception of the hinging and wing attachment method. The wings are REMOVEABLE! Very cool to see on a foamy.
The hinges are a torque tube set up with very nice laser cut, ply peices and CF tubes. I looked at the instructions a few times to make sure I didnt mess it up as I hinged the elevator. No big deal after that piece was done and the rest of the plane was hinged with no problem.
Just make sure you have the control horns on the correct side for each piece.

The wings have a groove in them to accept a long Carbon Spar. Glue it in place and then put some Blenderm Tape over the rod top and bottom. The wing becomes very stiff after that.
There is a smaller 4" tube that gets glued into one side and acts as a spar/wing joiner. The other wing simply slides onto the tube.
To attach the wings to the horizontal fuse piece they provide you with two very nice Phenolic pieces with threaded inserts on them. Simply glue them into place, aligning the pre-cut holes and your done.
On wing slides into place and gets screwed to the fuse with two nylon bolts. Then slide the other wing into place, the tube joiner slides into the tube and then screw the second wing in place with the nylon bolts. Done. Wings are attached. Simple.

The motor and electronics get mounted just like any other foamy you've built.
EZ connectors are provided to secure the pushrods to the servos. Z Bends at the surface end makw the other connection.
I did have one EZ connector come off while flying because the screw that holds them to the servo came loose.
Mike told me he is changing those in future kits to a more secure EZ connector.
I had the plane framed up in about two hours and it was time to put the gear into it.
This is a rundown of what mine has in it.

Scorpion S-30320-14 Motor
Scorpion 40A ESC
APC 14x7 prop
Excaliber 3S 2100 Lipo
2- JR DS 168 Wing servos
2- JR NES 341 Tail servos
AR 6100 Spektrum Receiver

How it flies

I have gotten several flights on the Yak now and its a lot of fun to fly.
Its the first flate plate foamy I have flown that has intertia! All the normal maneuvers are extrmemely easy to do with the plane because of its size.. Bigger flies better.
Flight times seem to be around 10 minutes.

Conclusion

If your looking for something that not many people have, or something totally unique, check out this plane from DWFoamies.com

You won't be dissapointed.

This is one of my Favorites as well. I just love how slow it does all of the Manuvers. It is as if you are on 50% speed on the simulator. I flew one low and slow for a very long time without crashing (which is rare in Foamie world) It took Eric Power AKA SEG to give it its first Tera Firma meeting and all that did was chip off a 1"x2" square off of the elevator.

Mike at DW is an awesome guy who is constantly trying to improve on new designs as well as current ones.

Would a EFlite Park 480 fly one? It also requires a 40 amp speed control, but it only pulls a 11X4.7 prop.
