Introduction

I'd like to take a couple of minutes and tell you about a product that a good friend of Flying Giants is carrying. AeroGraphix is known for killer graphics, but that is not all they have to offer. One of the "other" products is made by 3M.

There are many types of adhesives out there. Probably the best known is the traditional "squeeze bottle" epoxy where you have to squirt some part A out and then some of part B and hope that you have the same amount dispensed. Then you have to stir it up and apply it onto whatever you are working on. I've used everything from popsicle sticks to brushes. I've even tried transferring it into a syringe so that I could actually control where and how much I was putting down. Well needless to say that turned out to be a mess. This is where 3M has a great solution. There are a lot of products made by 3M. The line that we will be focusing on is the Scotch-Weld Epoxy Adhesive.

Out of the Box:

Highslide JS

I opened up by goodie box and the first thing that I noticed was that the epoxy doesn't come in tubes that you have to squeeze. These epoxies come in side-by-side Duo-Paks that get mounted into a dispensing gun, better known as the EPX plus II applicator gun. There are four different epoxies that AeroGraphix is carrying that should handle all of your epoxy needs: DP-100, DP-100NS, DP-420 and DP-460.

Using the Glue

If you are unsure as to which you should use, here are descriptions from AeroGraphix's website:

THE APPLICATOR
The EPX Plus II Applicator is used to dispense 3M™ Scotch-Weld™ adhesives in duo-pak cartridges. The applicator is a low-cost portable, self contained metering, mixing and dispensing machine that simultaneously meters and mixes two-part adhesives as the material is applied.

3M™ Scotch-Weld™ Epoxy Adhesive DP100 Clear Duo-Pak
A Fast Setting, Room Temperature Curing, Two-Part Adhesive for Bonding a Variety of Materials Like Metals, Ceramics, Wood and Many Plastics. It has a 1:1 mix ratio. It permits application on many vertical surfaces. Features: Fast cure adhesive with a 5 minute work life, and develops handling strength in approximately 15 minutes. It's low viscosity allows easy dispensing and is ideal for filleting and potting.

3M™ Scotch-Weld™ Epoxy Adhesive DP100NS (NON SAG) Translucent Duo-Pak

A non-sag, translucent version of 3M™ Scotch-Weld™ DP-100 Adhesive with a 1:1 mix ratio. Permits application on many vertical surfaces. Features: Fast cure 5 min. adhesive. Rigid epoxy.

3M™ Scotch-Weld™ Epoxy Adhesive DP420 Off-White Duo-Pak
A high performance, two-part epoxy adhesive offering outstanding shear and peel adhesion, and very high levels of durability. This adhesive has controlled flow, a 2:1 mix ratio, a 20-30 minute work life, and develops handling strength in 1-2 hours. Ideal for Hinging, Cowl rings, Wing tube sockets etc.

3M™ Scotch-Weld™ Epoxy Adhesive DP460 Off-White Duo-Pak
A high performance two-part epoxy adhesive for bonding a wide variety of substrates with outstanding levels of reliability and durability. Toughened to provide high peel and shear strength. This adhesive has controlled flow, a 2:1 mix ratio, a 60 minute work life. Ideal for Hinging, Cowl rings, Wing tube sockets etc.

Highslide JS Highslide JS

Using the EPX plus II applicator gun is very simple. First figure out which 3M epoxy you will be using. The DP-100 and DP-100NS are both 1:1 mixing ratios. Both of the tubes in the cartridge are the same size. These use the plunger that has the two equal sized legs. If you are using DP-420 or DP-460 they are 2:1 and you will need the plunger that has one plunger leg that is narrower than the other. To get it ready to use just flip up the locking tab with your thumb and insert the correct plunger through the front of the gun. Then take your Duo-Pak and slide it down into place and close the clamp. There is a 90 degree twist cap on the front of the cartridge that needs to be removed. Grab a paper towel and dispense just a little bit of epoxy onto it to make sure that both parts of the epoxy are ready. Take one of the applicator tips and push it onto the front of the cartridge and rotate 90 degrees so that it locks in place.  Now you are ready to use the epoxy. Once you have your pieces that you want to epoxy organized all there is left to do is squeeze the trigger and you can see the epoxy being mixed in the applicator on its way to the tip. Now you're in business!

Glue performance

I decided to do a little test. I want to glue a popsicle stick onto a piece of ¼" balsa to see how well it works. When I got my care package I got two different applicator tips. I got a couple short gold ones and a couple long ones. I used a long applicator tip with the DP-420 epoxy. I have some old fashioned 30 minute squeeze bottle epoxy that I was comparing it to. Needless to say the 3M system worked AWESOME!  You can tell by the pictures that it is a much better method.  Later I used the short gold applicator tips with even better results.

Highslide JS Highslide JS Highslide JS
Precision dispensing is the name of the game here. I found it very easy to put exactly how much I wanted and exactly where I wanted it to go. I am working on another project and I used the DP-420 for the hinges. Using the 3M system I did not have sticky fingers at the end and I was able to put the epoxy directly in the holes without having to clean up the surrounding areas of the surfaces from trying to spoon-feed epoxy into the holes.  I also used the DP-420 to glue in the horizontal stab. I had a very small dispensing tip that I picked up at a hobby store a while back and pushed it onto the applicator's tip. I was able to put the stab through the fuse and dispense epoxy all around the stab without trying to put epoxy on the stab and around the stab cradle before inserting the stab into the fuse. This 3M system worked excellent.

TIPS!

It works good to have a couple of things lined up to epoxy at a time, otherwise you'll go through extra tips.

Conclusion

Simply put, if you are tired of dealing with messy two part epoxy and want the easiest epoxy to use, give AeroGraphix a call and get some 3M Scotch-Weld Epoxy ordered. Besides selling all of the items separate, AeroGraphix also sells a starter kit with the applicator gun, nozzles, a DP-420 and a DP-460. Thanks for your time and here is a customer's testimonial regarding the 3M Scotch-Weld Epoxy systems.

"I have been an aircraft crew chief for 19 years, working on everything from a Cessna 172 to a Bombardier Global express intercontinental corporate jet.  For the past 10 years I have been working in a Bombardier completion center were we use many different 3M products.  The one item that stands out in my mind are the epoxies that we use.  The 3M epoxy that stands out in my mind is the DP line of 100 and 400 series epoxy.  I have adapted them to my hobby and building of giant scale remote controlled aircraft.  The epoxy is so versatile I use it anywhere from hinges to firewall mounts. I keep tubes of 3M in my trailer for quick repairs at the field using the DP100.  This epoxy dries in 10 minutes.

The complete 3M mixing system includes a dispensing gun and mixing nozzle for PERFECT ratio mixing every time.  The trick to the nozzles is that it mixes the epoxy perfect every time and the gun plunger pushes out the perfect amount every time, you don't need to worry about mixing the correct quantity or worry if you stirred it enough using 3M's system."

I always have hated epoxy because I always made a mess of the work. This makes it idiot proof. I would have never thought that epoxy could have been so easy.

Hey all,

Again another great review provided by Flying Giants!

We were approached by Tony our 3M rep to start selling the 3M Scotch Weld brand adhesives. Tony thought it would be a prefect biz relationship since we use so much 3M brand vinyl products. Well without hesitation we totally agreed and have had nothing but great responses from all of the customers that have tried the Scotch Weld system.

The 3M Scotch Weld Epoxy system is easy to use, very accurate, cost effective, and stronger that the two closest competitors. From field repairs to fuselage construction, Cowl ring install to Hinge gluing the 3M system just cant be beat! Especially at the great pricing that we have for the system.

One customer that we just switched over from the Hysol system says...
"The 3M epoxy system beats Hysol and AeroPoxy hands down when it comes to Handling strength, Dry time and overall PSI strength, I am very happy with it" ....Pat Frost custom jet builder/flyer.

Please visit our site to view the products and cost. We are adding items all the time so check back frequently. www.aerographix.biz

Thank you,
Bryan Zang

side note... THIS STUFF IS no joke!!!
At the STL Huckfest my Carden edges cowl mounting blocks came loose. (Builder used a different system than the norm) Bryan hooked me up with Tony who brought over some of his most "bad ass" 3M Scotch weld and let me use it. It fixed everything. And not in a temporary kind of way, but a "you can literally hang off of the cowl mount now" kind of way.

The next plane I build, all the firewalls and gear mounts will be installed with this stuff, simply the strongest and easiest to use glue I have ever seen!

Sweet! Re: 3M Scotch-Weld Epoxy

This stuff is the Bomb. I have been using it for years on full scale and model aircraft. You can lay down perfect fillets of this glue in all your high load areas and forget about tristock. 420 is perfect for this and will not run on a vertical surface. The 100 sets fast and is perfect for field repairs if needed. I have some in my trailer just incase!! Jason I,m glade to see you guys bringing this out to the modeling community.
