The delta wing has proved to be an incredibly stable platform for bombing. The B-58 was created as a gap filler much the same as the Titan missiles were. The plane was incredibly expensive to operate with very high fuel costs due to its Mach 2 capability. Once the Russians developed SAMS the planes high speed, high altitude safety factor went away forcing it to fly incursions at low level, a task it was not designed to do. It therefore became obsolete.
