yes i do have a camera available. and yes it is a semi scratch built project. when i crashed the plane i did not realize i was dead stick until i went to pull into a vertical up line at about 100 feet off the ground which promptly stalled the plane and it went strait into a tree/bush but never hit the ground. the plane came to rest about 2 feet off the ground and the only damage done was ripped the left wing half in half. so i could have just re built the wing but i also have a 50cc extra so what is the point. so now fast forward 6 months and i have decided to resurrect the plane into a bi plane. i am completely re designing the wings so it will look something like an ultimate biplane. as far as landing gear go the main gear will be at the leading edge of the bottom wing so i think i will keep them where they are. here are some pics of the plane in its current state.`also i have decided to up the engine to a .61 2 stroke for a little extra ponies

Your new wings are going to be less cord than the originals yes? So whats is the plan to fill in the void on the fuse which otherwise would have been the wing seat? And did you adjust for the narrower wings positioning ending up as 0 incidence?

yes and yes. the new wings will have a much smaller cord than the original wing so to deal with the gap i decided to build my new wings the same way the old wing was built by building filler block that is built onto the new wings so that the new wings will be mounting the same way the old one did. and yes i did set the new wing to 0* incidence. you can see this filler block in my drawings the formers for it and the side for the box is at the bottom of the drawing.

Subscribed. new wings are 784 sq, but the old wing was only 592sq. Why such a large increase in area? Just trying to understand your process. Last edited by Dewayne Vaughn; 11-01-2009 at 12:28 PM. |

my biggest reason for the larger wing area was to make the plane more square to the fuse length and not have a very short cord. my rib template is actually a slightly modified selig air foil that i got from a program that plots air foils. the thickness is about 15% i think

hey thanks!! I think 15% is about right, and selig's are great!! Do you think the long wings will decrease your roll rate too much? Also, you might think about increasing your rudder size to help dampen the dutch roll you'll probably get with the long wings. The reason I'm asking all these questions is that I'm working on something similar and I'd kinda like to know how you reached your conclusions... it may help me with mine! I know some of the guys at baxter, the're a good bunch. |
