The softness looks like camera shake to me, try a faster shutter speed. You will lose the nice blur effect in the background... It's tough to get really sharp panning shots like that, just have to follow the subject as smoothly as you can, and keep trying, sooner or later you'll get one that works. You might also experiment with flash and slow shutter speed, you can get some crazy shots like that. Mark, Till now, my main digital camera has been a little Nikon 5400 point and shoot. I found that macro is the only thing it does well. As soon as you zoom with it, all bets are off! -Matt | ||||||||||||||||||

Mike, I agree with Matt that it looks like camera shake and motion blur in that pic. Although I will say I really like the shot. If you look at the rider's right shoulder it is in-focus. The blur in the rest of the image is nice and shows the motion in the scene. If the whole thing was blurred out it would be different but what you have captured there is what a lot of pro motorsport photogs strive for. They keep low shutter speeds of anywhere from 1/40th to 1/160th to get the kind of blur they want. I see you took that shot at 1/125th shutter with your lens zoomed all the way out at 28mm. Since the camera was on auto sports mode it did all the settings for ya. If you would turn up the shutte speed to at least 1/500th you could eliminate the blur but it would look like a static shot. The bike's wheels would look "frozen" and unnatural. This happens a lot with our prop airplane photos. If the camera takes a shot with 1/800th or higher shutter speed then the prop looks like it's sitting still. One thing that helps learning is to manually make setting changes and see the results and then be able to look at the settings other photogs use in their work. A lot of pictures on the web will have the exif info embedded in them. That way you can use a program to read the photos settings. I used a freeware program from opanda to pull up the info on your pic. You can download it for free here - http://www.opanda.com/en/download/index.html here's what it told me |
