Thanks for the comments Brett! There were quite a few great photos this month, you had your work cut out for you! I loved the clouds that day, they made such a great background for the photos. I prefer my photos to have something in the background rather than just blue sky. Of course Southwest Nebraska was getting one heck of a storm from those fluffy clouds

Richo, I believe you will get 2nd, since I am on the Heligiants staff, I can't place (correct Wizard?) so you should get moved up to 2nd! Great photo by the way! I want to get a wide angle lens for my camera, I can't do that shot with my 100-400 zoom

It's all cool by me! I just liked the shot, it's not often they turn out they way I want them!!
It's just one of sacrafices we make for the giants! I suppose all the cash, chicks and free engines, we get as staff balances the equation.

I love the mood that this photo exhibits by being monochromatic. Also the way that it's cropped lends itself to the emotional feeling of the picture. By being shot from the side and to the back of the subject, it gives the viewer just enough of the facial expression to come up with their own story of what's going through the mind of the young man. In addition, the short focal length, giving a shallow depth of field, automatically focuses the viewers attention on the subject.

What can I say, this is just a really cool shot. The depth of field and shutter speed were set perfectly as you can see both man and plane in focus, and the prop has just enough blur to let you know thats it's spinning. The repeating theme of the stars and stripes on pilot and plane is what really makes this shot.


Honorable Mention

This is an absolutely stunning photo. With nothing more than sky, smoke, and plane even a non pilot can tell exactly what is going on; the plane is falling. This is a result of a perfect composition. If the plane was in any other position within the frame, it wouldn't have worked The eye will naturally follow the smoke trail from the lower right hand corner, up and around to the subject. This is a case of "less is more". I also love how the smoke is back lit, yet I can still see the colors of the plane.

I just really liked this shot. By using a warming filter along with the yellow plane, it gives me a warm and fuzzy feeling. It reminds me of all the late afternoon flying sessions trying to get as many flights in before the sun goes down. Even though the lense flare at the left is a little distracting, they still didn't take away from the feeling I get when I look at this photo.
