Figured, thanks for the quick update.

[quote=sweetpea;757655]Please post the photos of the can installation. I tore the covering off the rudder and the fuse today. I don't think I have enough covering to get very far on the recover though. Hello, the pics are at page 7 of this tread. I enlarge the hole in bottom fuse and I put a bulkhead to support the center of the pipe. I remove the covering under fuse to do this. |

A silly question, but the silicon tubing that was used to hold the cans in place is that glow fuel tubing?

I'm not sure that is in the pic. But I did alot of searching when I had my 42% built. I found that glo tubing works really well and won't melt at the heat a can produces. Problem I had was the diameter was too small. I found a Scuba shop online that sells larger diameter tubing that is safe to 500 degrees. Basically its the same as surgical tubing but costs next to nothing since it isn't sterilized.

Thanks, should be able to use the large dia (5/32") since I made the mounts and had gas tubing in there (but they started to melt). I just need to replace the tubing.

Can't help on the knife edge yet.... I started covering the wings today! Then ran out of white covering. I'm off to the LHS (well not really local, its about 45mins away). I promise pics either tonight or tomorrow. The fuse will be tackled last as I plan to do the whole speckle paint on the inside and you don't want covering on the plane when you do that, it gets everywhere. My goal.......Covering completely done by Bell-Air Big Bird! Not sure the paint will be done by then but at least the covering and radio/motor installation.

Finally some decent weather and the plane was ready to go. Took it out yesterday, but it was raining in the morning so got out later that day. At first there was no one else at the field, decided to put it together hoping someone would show up (will not run with out anyone around). Another flyer dropped by, but the wind started to pick up. Still not too bad, but did not want to maiden with too much wind. So just ran it on the ground, tweaked the needles, found a couple of things that needed to be fixed. One of the flying wires pulled out of the solder joint, the TBM compact muffler on the left side was rubbing on the cowl and the cowling was rubbing on the exhaust tube. Resoldered the flying wire, filed down the TBM muffler (the bolt tube was not the same angle as the front part), and took a little more off the cowl around the exhaust tube. Today, the weather was better (scattered showers and light wind). Put it together, ran and checked it over. Ready for the maiden. Up she went, the engine would take a while to clean up at full throttle, so landed and tweaked the needles a bit. Filler her up and off again, engine still needs a little more tweaking. Did some basic IMAC manouvers, upline and downlines seems fairly straight (a little hard to tell with the wind), 45 degree upline then inverted and it needed a little elevator to keep it straight (so balance seems right on). Got 4 flights in and packed her up just in time before the rain came. This plane is very solid in the air, easy to land with very little wing rock and the wind did not affect it much (other than a little rudder was needed since the wind was slight crosswind). Now to add smoke for next time and get someone to take some photos.

Well I got the engine tuned so that it is running very well and strong. Got a couple more flights in and had no issues to fix when done for the day. I like looking at the biplane in the air, but with the cloudy conditions the plane gets dark fairly fast. I like the color, but I am thinking that it may change for next year (winter project). Really watching the recover post.
