Default 37% Ultimate Balance Procedure Question

Hi Guys,

I've got a 37% that we plan to maiden on Tuesday. Just in the final steps of preparation.

I have the plane ready to balance, but the instruction manual is not real clear. To make sure I have a safe first flight, can you help?

Do I balance the plane with our without the wings. If I use the wings, I assume I just balance with the lower ones? Do I also install the cabanes on the lower wing?

Any help you can provide or post would be great! I've checked the various forums and everyone seems to do it differently.

Thanks a million!

Rich

If it is a PAU you balance it with the top wing off with no cabanes. You should balance it 2" forward of the rear screw on the top wing bracket.

Sounds good so balance with bottom wing and fuse. Will do. Thanks for the help. The manual says nothing about the wings in the procedure and it seems everyone is doing them differently. It is a BME / PAU Ultimate.

db is right. The instruction say no top wing and no cabanes. It looked like a real pain to me but it was real simple. I checked mine, it was in the range, and I flew it. It flies great.

Did a maiden flight this weekend and it flew great. If anything I think it is slightly nose heavy. Was real happy with the result and thanks for the advice! It is awful nice to have a plane that is different than everyone else's!

That is what I'm shooting for as well.

I'm almost ready to balance my PAU Ultimate.

Sam, it is looking really nice. Nice colors and design!
Had mine running today, tuned the engine a bit and checked for any thing that needs to be looked at. One of the flying wires pulled out of the clevis, soldered back in. One of the wooden pin for the canopy came loose, glued back in place. The TBM compact mufflers are quieter than stock mufflers, but the left side was rubbing on the cowl, filed the edge of the bolt tube down and all is good (it was straight instead of follow the angle for the compact part). It rained in the morning, so it was almost lunch time by the time I got to the field. No one was there so I did not want to fly it or run it with no one else around. Started to put it together, hoping someone would show. Got about half done and another flyer stopped by. Ran on the ground and tweaked the needles. Too windy for me for a maiden, plus the other flyer had to leave. Packed it all up and hoping for a nicer morning tomorrow.

I got it together tonight with the scheme just about done. It looks sweeter than I had hoped.
