Does the JR HD Switch use 18ga leads?? I thought they were 22ga. Anyway, I would do either Dual 16ga. or 22ga. Only the 22ga wire will already have JR connectors on the end, since that id the thickest I have seen them.

Unless the switch had 18ga leads, I would just go with dual 22ga wire w/ JR connectors already installed.

Just let me know.

OK, I thought I had it figured out but after I talked with Chad (thanks) it seems that I can't charge the A123 packs through the JR HD switches with the Cell Pro charger. The Cell Pro is a balance charger so would need a 3 wire setup( + - and signal wire)from the battery and that is why the balance lead is needed.

But I want to charge through the switch, sooooo

I am informed that I can use a regular charger for NiMHs with auto peak detection(not a balance charger) with the added adapter that is available to make it A123 compatible, or a A123s charger but it can't be a balance charger to charge through the switch.

So I have a ACE Smart Charger for NiMHs ( its a two wire, + - lead)can I use this with the adapter to charge A123 packs through the switch.

Could I use a Hangar 9 Discharger set on 5cell (6V) to test the capacity of the packs on occasion.

Thanks....

Flip,

Just to clarify, you need a Nicad capable charger....most chargers do both nimh and nicad, I just wanted to clarify. A Triton charger makes a great (non balancing) charger because it dispalys the amount of Mah put in.

I am also releasing a new charger later this week. I have been keeping it under wraps until I can verify it does everything it is supposed to do. It will be a 7A capable nicad/nimh/li-io/li-fe/lipo capable and can either balance charge or regular charge. The projected cost is going to be $139 and will definately be the best charger out for our intended purpose......we'll see.

Feel free to call with any questions.

Chad

OK, that sounds good.

All this need to balance charge from a separate jack makes life difficult.

It would be nice if your new charger would show amps in, just to keep tabs on the pack capacity.

Anyway why all the need for balance charging anyway, we are only talking 2 cells and from what I have heard they seem to balance them selves quite well. I don't think I ever balance charged my Nihm cells. What am I missing?

Thanks.

Flip, you can get away with not balancing them. I do balance them and will continue since I am using the Cellpro 4 charger. Some folks are not balancing them and they seem to be fine. I just like the fact that my packs match and one cell does not get hit harder than the other. Rumor has it that this new charger is a balancing charger anyway no harm in setting it up that way.

The new charger will display the amount of Mah put back in, and should be able to charge through both the balancing leads, or through the pos/neg non balancing output connectors.

Balanced A123 charge through JR or Cermark switch.

The 2 cell pack has 2 nodes. Wire black/brown to the negative (-) battery output, wire red to the positivr (+) battery output, wire the white (signal) to the battery strap that puts the 2 cells in series. When the swith is off the charge jack is conected to the battery pack.

Wire up a male charge jack for the charger that matches the color code 2 node configuration and balance charge right through the switch jack.

Doesn't quite work like that....the internal charge jack on the switch will not allow you to just "attach" the signal wire to the strap. While it may be able to be taken apart, it would not look like a very clean set-up. You can balance charge by simply using a JR connector as the balancing connector and attach a charging jack to the side of the plane.

Then use a JR to cell pro (or other charger) converter and balance charge through the charging jack.

You are right about using a charge jack, you just won't be able to use the "built-in" charge jack, and if you can, it would require disassembly and possible destruction of the switch.
