Default Two receivers or power expander

I'm collecting gear for a new 100cc airplane. I'm planning on using two a123 packs for receiver power. I am also considering the use of two receivers instead of a power expander. I figure a second receiver is better money spent. What do you guys think of this set up? Also is it possible to "Y" each battery to both receivers for battery redundancy or should I power each receiver separately?

Eric

One receiver and two packs, OR one receiver and a power expander....forget the second receiver....especially if you're running Spektrum.

And if you're not running Spektrum (or another reliable spread spektrum system)....switch!

My personal opinion only.

The "second receiver ", once a fairly common add on for large planes - is pretty much a relic now.
In th last year or so we all got hit with
A- 2.4 radios
B- really NEW battery technology
C- Hungry Hippo servos
This Triple Shot really changed the picture of whats up.
One, really solid 2.4 radio system -well fed by a A123 power pack- pretty well covers the bill-
Speaking of Bills - your avatar is interesting - I knew that guy before he had his "change"- appearances are deceiving.

Thanks for the input guys. One of the guys at my field is flying a 40% with a single receiver and no power expander with no issues. It just seems hard on the receiver to put that much current directly into it. do most power expanders reduce the amount of current that the receiver see's or are they just simply a bus bar?

The receiver NEVER sees the current - none of it goes thru the rx
the rx just uses some of the power from the battery to process it's internal workings - then supplies a modulated signal to each of the servos -telling em what to do .

Is this in the case of a power expander or is that how the receiver works?

Either way the same -
don't feel bad -believing that the power travels through the rx is a very common misconception.
The strip along one end of rx is the POWER STRIP -or BUSS .
all of the power coming to the rx flows along this strip - to the rx and the servos
as power is absorbed by the servos it is drawing from the batteries .
IF-------- power being absorbed lowers voltage levels -of course the voltage to the rx AND the servos all goes down in unison.
One can buy devices to totally isolate power from the rx to the servos.
However -simply supplying a common source of power ADEQUATE for the servos and rx uses -does the job.
This is what all the dither about the A123 is all about
The cells will suply huge current loads without having voltage drop to unacceptable levels
The only requirement is proper wiring/components which do not restrict power flow
NO regulators are needed .

Well thats your opinion. Glad you have one. Dont need to spend more money on 2.4 when my setup is working just perfect. Never will go to 2.4. Cant wait for everyone to go 2.4 that way I'll have my frequency all to myself. And what do I need all this new technology?? Its not going to make me a better pilot. All my stuff pilots my plane perfectly.
