This is what I have been told by Futaba. Basically the ATV is the total travel, and AFR is the steps in that travel. (this is for the 9zap) So,,,,,,,, If you set your ATV's to 100 and AFR's to 140 you will have better resolution than the other way around.
I never tested it for my self, I should have with a protractor.

Bro, Do you mean set the ATV's to 140 and the D/Rs' to 100.
Thats what Jkopich and I thought. The ATV in the 9 cap is the TOTAL travel and the D/Rs' just widen the steps.
Hey look!I have been doin' it rite!

Resolution can be applied in different ways... first you have the resolution of the TX, 512, 1024, 2048 etc.. then there is the total steps of the servo per a % of travel, and finally the mechanical linkage itself which is what I am reffering to.

If you use the maximum EPA and D/R settings in the radio you will take advantage of its maximum capable travel thus you have more overall servo travel ( you could also program the servo for more travel but you will lose a little servo resolution because the amount of steps won't change in the servo.) Consider that when the servo travels further per a certain degree of the control surface travel there is finer resolution at the surface. This allows improved the centering at the surface.

Think about it... say your servo moves 1 degree or less per one+ degrees of control surface travel, the centering and resolution would be poor because the servo has to barely move to affect the control surface. If the servo had to move 2+ degrees for 1 degree or less of control surface travel then the control surface would not be as affected by a small movement of the servo, thus improving the centering and resolution of the surface.

With 3D flying you need mass amounts of travel which makes this situation more exagerated... you need to use a longer horn to get the travel needed which decreases the torque output and ultimately the resolution of the linkage. This is where it is critical that you use all the servos travel that is available to you in the radio by maxing out the EPA and D/R. If your radio is not maxed out at full rate then your servo horn is too long.

If your not doing this then you are not getting all you can out of any servo.

Mike.

This is one 5955 on a 34% Plane Plus Extra. It may not hold up to to a continous heavy 3D beating, but it's holding up to this kind of flying.

I don't like the idea of dropping big bucks on servos if the gears wear out quickly. I'll use multiple 5955's before I do that.
