Help! JR X9303 with or without 72 oz/in DS821 digital servos?

I am looking into geting a JR X9303 TX and was wondering if the 4 DS821 servos that come with the radio are worth the $100.00.

My major concern is spending the extra $100 for a four pack of paper weights.
Are these servos for parkfliers and foamies, 3d/percision, pattern fliers, gliders, or pylon racers?

I plan on getting a few different planes as my flying skills progress. As of now I have a Super Cub but I don't plan on using the radio for it unless I throw ailerons on it. I'd rather get another plane than spend the $ in upgrades.

Im leaning towards the JR because I will not liklet out grow it. It has tons of features to make it possible to fly just about anything. This radio will not limit my plane or flying style.

I read this from JR but I'm not sure what I can use them in.
DS821 Digital Sport Hi-Torque Servo Key Features
  • Lower price point, but higher performance value
  • New, longer-lasting plastic gear material
  • Same size as standard servo
  • Ball bearing-supported output shaft

They are fine servos for anything other than a giant or 1/4 scale. They would be fine for a 40-60 size. I usually don't get the rest of the setup if I don't need it only because that's $100 that could go to the servos that I really want or something else.

I witnessed one fail on a raptor 50. It locked at full deflection on the aileron. The heli hit so hard on concrete that it broke 2 fins off the head of the motor. We check the servo out and it would only work one direction. You had to help it move the other. This was before the bulletin was released warning not to use them in a glow heli bigger than a 30. I waited to get my X9303 without the 821's. I have never seen any problems with a DS811 (made in Japan).

Yes. I have seen Raptor 50's flown without a problem with Hitec HS 425's and Futaba 3004's. The 821 I saw fail was on a friends helicopter. He wasn't 3d'ing the Heli just some loops and rolls. It was a problem with the electronics not being able to stand up to the vibs. The Servo's had just hit the market and was recommended by the LHS. He replaced them all with Futaba 9252's.

Here is what Horizon says about it. Link

Tech Notes
Quote:
The DS821 servo is a powerful, accurate sport digital servo recommended for RC airplane applications up to 1.20-size. For helicopters, the DS821 operates best with 30-size glow models, and up to 50-size electric. Loads and vibration in larger models may cause premature failure of the servo resulting in damage or injury to property and persons.

the answer to your question is based on the planes you will be buying and whether you plan to buy servos for that plane. If you plan on buying a 60 size aerobatic plane or up to a 150 size warbird then get the servos with the radio. If not then do not get the servos.

Chopper guys wont touch them for the most part, vibration seems to be the culprit. http://www.runryder.com always has 4 packs for sale for about 60 bucks. Esprit Models sells radio sets without them and sells the servos pretty cheap now and then too.
