IMO the first thing you need to learn is drawing, the help available depends on the program you use. Then learn G-Code, learn the basic G and M codes and how to read them. Once you have created a drawing, you can shoot out the g-code, check it(because you will know how to read it) and then find someone who has a CNC or build your own like I did. check out cnczone.com and you will get an idea what your getting into. you may also want to check out a local community college and see if they offer any classes. Good luck!

Here's a varmint stock done in Pro E and then washed through MCX to generate tool paths. ![]() ![]() Finished product: ![]() A couple things to consider when working with surfaces, solids, etc. If possible, edit your post so that instead of having arc movements broken up into individual point coordinates you just change the work plane so that it treats a Z/X or Z/Y arc movement the same as it would an X/Y arc movement.. This does a couple things for you. First it saves wear and tear on the machine because now the ball screws are not "studdering" from one point to another. Remember, the encoders are hell bent on going to that specific position and it's hard on stuff when it accelerates/dwells/accelerates to the next point. Even with a buffer that reads 3-4 lines ahead it still effects it. You'll see it right away in surface finishes if machining anything harder than wax. An arc movement by contrast is linear and fluid. It also eliminates a pile of code since an arc movement can be written on a single line. Just a little more elegant way to program. Editing posts can be a real biche though so be careful and make sure you run an empty spindle in dead air a few times to ensure it's right. Good luck. This is all I can show at this time.... a Recce Pod for MQ9/Reaper... about 1000 pounds and 14 feel long... Rough surfaces first generated and then contents stuffed inside.. then the OML Surfaces were finalized... a quick CFD was done as well as a Flutter analysis.. (Not by me !!) Next the internal mounting details as well as climate control systems were detailed while the OML was cut from some 22 pound foam (General Plastics I think)... after the left and right masters were complete... the molds were fabricated for 250 degree cure parts... Pro/Engineer (Wildfire III) was used for the modeling and Pro/Manufacturing was used for the tool paths... I will try to find pictures of the primary masters being cut monday. db-00.jpg db-01.jpg db-03.jpg Last edited by Mithrandir; 01-25-2009 at 11:12 AM. |

It's from Russia and it's called "Fibron". It's just a laminate material with a pile of resin injected under high pressure. Very dense and very heavy. This stuff laughs in defiance when in the face of razor sharp carbide. Sends that stuff home with thumb in mouth in short order! Very abrasive. It's so hard I don't apply any finish. Sand to 600 grit and then rub a couple coats of Johnson's floor wax on it. Buff with a car buffer. Nice cause if you ding it you just sand it out and rub more wax on it. No more brain scratching trying to figure out how to match a finish. Makes for nice/quick stock work on a working gun!! PRO E WFIII rocks BTW. I've seen copies of it for sale in Bangkok for 100 Thai baht. (about three bucks!!) You can buy MCX for $3 here in Baghdad. NO, this doesn't mean I did. Having a DoS TS clearance and possessing bootleg pieces of software aren't good bed fellows. . . Last edited by nesikachad; 01-26-2009 at 10:15 AM. | ||||||||||||||||||

Anybody have 3D files for any of the engines you want to share. I'd really like to be able to put them into a SolidWorks Assy Models. Looking for 100cc-200cc stuff, but anything would be cool for the future. I'm using SolidWorks so I use almost any 3d file type. Thanks
