Default Hmmmm... Full Scale Sim Rides, Gotta' love it!!!

Hey all,

I know a lot of you guys don't get the chance to see military bases in action. I happen to live in Del Rio, TX, which is a stones throw away from Laughlin AFB, which brings me to my point of this thread.

It just so happens that a couple of guys from the base like to fly R/C, that in itself is pretty cool. Several months ago we were looking for an alternative flying site for our personal planes, our being the instructors of the company I work for, Archie Stafford, Paul Futey and myself, all pattern pilots formally of District 4.

I believe it was Todd Blose that originally gave Nick B. Archie's contact info, Nick was looking for some other guys in the area that liked to fly R/C planes. Arch gave me a call one evening said, "how'd you like to go on the base and fly this Saturday?" I'll give you one guess as to my answer!!!
For quite a while we flew on an abandoned 6000' runway, flying what we brought, never a worry of running out of strip.

Well we all got busy, built our own field close to town and started flying there instead of at the base.

A couple of weeks back we got a call from Ted, a T1 Sim instructor and fellow R/C pilot offering us some time in his Simulator...do you think for a minute we declined? Not in this lifetime!!! That ride was cool as heck, you'd have to be there to understand, the realism has to be experienced, it can't be described...We flew several missions one of which was to maneuver that bird into an in flight refueling position, docking with the nozzle, talk about concentration...

This all brings me to today's fun. We all went out to the base to help Nick maiden his new 41% Wildhare Extra. After a few difficulties with the motor, we eliminated all of the normal issues. The end result was we all agreed there was some sort of an ignition problem that needed to be addressed, being that the engine was purchased 2nd hand, we all felt it better to send it back to the manufacturer for a check up, than lose a bird for the sake of flying it today.

That still doesn't bring me to the final point of this thread...Nick asked me what I was doing on Tuesday, around 3:00 PM. I asked, "what do you have goin' on?" He said, "I have some open sim time on a T6 Simulator."
Heck YES!!!!!! Have any of you guys seen the T6 Texan Air Force trainer? Am I going to turn down some time on one of these sims? I think not!!!!!

Hopefully I will have some pics if anyone is interested.

Wish me luck!!

Ken Sounds like a blast. Many years ago I had the chance to fly one of the t-38 simulators at the same base. It wasn't one of the nice new type sims. It was just a mock up of the cockpit. The indicators were the only part of the simulator that actually did anything. It didn't even have a projected view from the cockpit. It was the summer of 1980. We were there for my brothers graduation from flight school.

Somewhere west of the base, there is a small canyon with a bridge over it. Rumor has it that every once in a while you will see someone fly under the bridge. I even heard of a few doing it inverted.

That would probably be the bridge over Lake Amistead, I flew under that bridge in the T1 sim

As part of a field trip for an aviation class in college I had a brief chance to fly a King Air sim. Sitting in the left seat was all business as each of us took a turn flying an instrument approach. It wasn’t until I sat in one of the instructor’s seat to watch before I marveled how cool it really was. From the back of the pilot’s seats forward it is the actual plane! The simulation of motion was eerily realistic.

I envy you. Wish I could have done more than a five minute approach.

Ken, your in for a treat. We'll see how your pattern sequence goes. The imax style display is awsome. I even know one kid that got airsick in the sim.

Hey Nick,

Does it help if I close my eyes?

Let's do the IMAC Basic, I've never flown that one!
