A Canadian invention is the best. The Roberston (cambered square ) screw would be in mass production if it wasn't for Ford back in the early days. Being Ford and the fact that he wanted everything made in "house" offered a buyout to Robertson for his design. Robertson refused, and wanting to keep it his own, patented his innovation to the early english designs. This infuriated Ford and he commisioned an americam (Phillips) to come up with the design that we know as the Star. (crap) We all know what happens with this type of head. It sucumbs to "cam "out which leads to a stripped screw. The Japanese and chinese have not been able to use this innovation due to licensing issues from the Robertson/Ford dispute. The Roberstson is a true Canadian gem. The world knows it and Japan will somehow be introducing it to all their manufacturing in the near future.. Lets all get over it and use what is best. No the Allen is not. Roberstson in all it's simplicity is. Or here is another write up I just found. It pertains to the licensing issues Robertson had back in the day. Apparently it turns out that Robertson was a little worked up over his patent (due to losses in the past) His fears may have ruined it for the rest of the world. Maybe it wasn't all Ford's doing, but it hasn't helped. Canada is still the only place that uses these screws none the less. Robertson screwdrivers are known for their ease of use one-handed (i.e., without using the second hand to hold the screw), and they also allow for the use of angled screw drivers and trim head screws. Robertson-head screwdrivers are available in range of tip-sizes. A given driver's suitability for use with a particular size of screw is indicated upon its handle according to the following system of colour-coded stripes:
![]() Close-up of Robertson heads Robertson had licensed the screw in England but the party with which he was dealing intentionally put the company under and purchased the rights from the trustee thus circumventing Robertson.[citation needed] He spent a small fortune buying back the rights. After that he refused to ever allow anyone to make the screws under license. When Henry Ford tried out the Robertson screws he found they saved considerable time in the production of cars but when Robertson refused to license the screws to Ford, he realized that the use of the screws would not be guaranteed and stopped using them.[citation needed] Last edited by Highlights; 06-18-2007 at 10:44 PM. |

From the original post, are we talking about the head of a screw, or the threads. As far as I know, regarding Phillips style drivers, and heads, there are two different types. Phillips. and Reed & Prince. use a reed & prince style driver in a phillips head, and you will strip out the head. As far as threads go, every fastener has what is called an "elastic limit". To keep it short, and sweet, take a fastener past this, and it all about helicoils baby!

Somebody please bring up torx heads. I can't believe we settled on the phillip's standard when such a superior screw tightening mechagnism exists.

It's 'tool-time' with Al:
Highlights is right, Robertson screws rule Eh. When I got to Canada 8 years ago and first saw these I was a little dumb founded but they are awesome because the screw stays on the head by itself like Highlights said.
