What Irks You about our Hobby?

There’s something in our hobby that really irks me. Do you have something that irritates you? Maybe if we openly discuss some of them then things could improve.

I’ll go first – it really irritates me when somebody says their plane weighs X pounds when you know it’s just not true. I’ll be more blunt - some people flat out lie about the weight of their plane. How irritating!

Why do I believe this? Because over the many IMAC contests and countless flying fields I’ve been to only a few times did someone admit their 40% weighed over 40 pounds. It’s amazing to me how many people say they have a 36 or 37 pound 40%! It takes a lot of planning and work to get this class of a plane to those weights especially, when they have canisters. Yes, it can be done. Yes they do exist. Yes, some people have them. However, it’s the exception and not the rule.

I always love the guy who says his 42% Extra with a 3W or DA150 only weighs 36 pounds. Then you see it struggle on the up lines to maintain speed, you see no lightening mods done on the build when they open it up, it looks like their wing tube is made out of conduit, you see big honk’n Nicads for batteries and you see large chunks of lead added for nose weight.

Common guys, tell the truth or don’t tell at all. It’s an insult to the person who really does have a light plane if you orally subtract 5 pounds from yours. If the truth be told most people probably don’t really know what their plane weighs much less have a means to measure it.

Having said all that, I highly respect most everybody in our hobby. RC flyers are the most upstanding, trustworthy people with integrity of any special interest group there is. They help you when you’re in need, they’ll give you spare parts, they’ll even loan you their plane to compete against them but for some reason they exaggerate about their weights!

It gets me when people try to turn the hobby into a political arena. IT'S A HOBBY!!!! Quit bitching, use some common sense, and have fun flying whatever!!

man i dont know what to say except one thing. man that irks me. and i always put the weight on the side of my plane, 6.75 lbs more than what it is, throws them off.man that irks them... i buy jeans smaller than i wear, and take the size patch off and sew it on the pants i wear that way i feel smaller man that irks me. but for shure the thing that irks me the most is when everyone thinks there stuff is better than yours, because they paid more for it..

Its not a political arena its a OPEN FORM so if he wants to start a thread getting Irks off his chest you should respect that, sounds like you have been called out with your heavy plane and it irks you that someone found you out chief.
