Well, I just made a reply on another thread about Mud bugs, and that got me to thinking about what you folk in the US call some food, that is the same food, but with a different name here in OZ. Like Mud bugs and Marron, Crawlfish and Crayfish, Etc. Now you folk have some funny names for some stuff, but I can;t tell ya what we call it, coz I just cant make out what the hell some of it is. WTF is Chittlins (sp?) and I wouldn't even guess at Grits...... so anyone can tell me what they are, I might be able to come up with our equivalent over here. Anyone else have any strange foods, food names they wondered about?. |

Chitterlings, or chittlins, are a hogs intestines (and disgusting) and grits are the same thing as polenta but cooked slightly different.

Grits are excellent... but I'm a Southern boy, so it's to be expected of me

Yep!! Nothing like some fresh fried ground up hogs head for breakfast. On my wifes first trip to the states my mother made some for breakfast and she was eating it until I told her what it was. LOL Good country Scrapple, I love it personally but you can't get it out here.

And there is another Virignia delicacy that requires just the right recipe: The Virginia Carp, Cyprinius Carpio, is especially good if cooked in the following manner. 1. Carp 2. 2 X 4 (pine) 3. Horse manure 4. Nail 5. Hammer 6. Roaring fire. Preferably white oak. Preparation instructions: Smear carp with horse manure Use hammer and nail to fasten carp to board Cook over open fire for 1/2 hour Remove nail Throw away carp Eat 2 X 4

I have just about the same recipe for a possum. Only difference is you place it on a pine board, pile the manure around it and then bake it at 400 for 3 hours, then throw everything else away and eat the horse manure! | ||||||||||||||||||
