| Flyin' Around ![]() | hey guys first time posting here on flying giants, i'm teaching my son how to fly rc (newly soloed), and he is thinking about ordering the aero works da 50 size yak, and with my help 30 plus years rc pilot get into a bigger plane for next year. has anyone out there got one flying? Guys at our club field have the da 100 size aero works yaks and extra's which i have flown, and i wonder how the 50 size flys. We want to get ours on order as they are getting a new batch in soon. love the flying giants web site Rc Smitty |

| Super Contributer ![]() | It'll be a great plane for you. From what I hear these new batches are much lighter than the originals. Our club president has one (just finished breaking in the DA-50) and it's a great flying plane. It'll do pretty much anything the pilot can and more. I don't know if this is a factor or not (was for me), but they are as complete of an ARF as you can get and all of the hardware is excellent. I just got a used AeroWorks Extra 260 in the 50cc size and I'm really liking it as well. Top notch company. When I'm ready for my next plane I'll be looking to see what they have again. - Wayne |

| www.engsoc.org/~thastie ![]() | I got the 50cc aeroworks Yak this Spring. DA-50 with slimline Pitts muffler. HS5955s all around. Mine came in at 18lbs dry.... so it's a little on the heavy side. With a 23x8 Mejzlik on there, it has good vertical for IMAC, but isn't quite what I'd call 3D powered. Try and pick your components to keep it light. On my first day out with it, my landing gear ripped out. I did add the reinforcement hardwood that came with the Kit, and the landing wasn't all that hard (I have witnesses ). I fixed that up with some of my own stock of plywood, and now it's bulletproof (without gaining much weight). If I were to get another one, I'd add some 1/8th and 3/16th aircraft ply to the landing gear area right from the start to help spread out the loads. I found that the fuselage ply that they use is quite light and brittle.Once you have the landing gear reinforced, the rest of the airframe is REALLY nice and strong. Like everyone says, the quick build really builds quick. The hatch and cowling mounts all lined up perfectly. The fit and finish of the parts was great. Nice flying plane, once you learn how it likes to flare, it lands like a pussy cat. (my fellow club members all think I'm some hot shot pilot because of how smooth the landings are...) The only reservation I have about using it as a second plane is the fact that crashes get more costly when you're flying this size, but that's true of any giant scale. Since you have lots of experience, I'm sure your son could get checked out on this plane with no problems. Tom |

| Flyin' Around ![]() | I've got one and a friend has one. Nice flying plane for the first time gasser. This one is my first time gasser. I've got a DA 50 with Slimline muffler, TBM Li-on batteries and Futaba S9155 servos. Everything else stock from Aeroworks and it weighs about 17 1/2# dry. The landing gear is somewhat weak. My friend broke his off twice. The second time he beefed the landing gear mount up and hasn't had any problems. I added the supplied landing gear mount reinforcement to mine and so far so good. When you learn to land it, it lands so soft the grass doesn't seem to move. It actually lands very nice. The plane flies like it's on rails. Flies where you point it and does things very precise and predictable. I haven't tried much 3D with it since I'm not a great 3D flier. The plane builds nice, easy and quick. Great instructions and great hardware. |

| Life Begins at 200 mph! ![]() | Ihave the 50cc AW Yak, it's a great plane and flies as good as it looks. I don't do 3D so I really can't comment on that part of it. For the type of flying I do I can find no wrong with it. Lands like a trainer after you get the feel for it. ![]() __________________________________________ Helicopters are made for harrier landings !! |

If I remember right you had to use Thin CA and soak the wood where the landing gear plywood mount meets the fuse at the bottom and then glue these hardwood pieces to the landing gear ply and the fuse sides with epoxy. Mine has held up so far but my buddy isn't the softest at landing his. Looks like this. I hope this helps. Last edited by maddmann : 02-18-2008 at 06:25 PM. | ||||||||||||||||||
