Well, first up hello everyone and just wanted to say thanks for creating such a fantastic site. Second up i have a little issue that someone could probably help me with. ANY ADVICE WELCOME!! So here's the deal...... got a new plane, a Great Planes Venus 40, of which i have heard only good things about, from a friend who built it. Now here's the problem, i found that the horizontal tailplane from tip to root was not the same (4mm longer) on one side and further more the same side is slightly lower. Now i have flown it and i think it requires way to much right rudder on uplines, does any one think that the tail could be a major contributer this, and if so can i reset the tail straight easily? As i say thank you, keep up the good work FG. Soloned |

Hey Soloned, It's great to have you join us!! As for your question, there could be several things wrong, if your stab is tilted, it may cause your plane to pull crooked into your upline. If your wings aren't level going in or during your radius to your upline it will cause your plane to lean one way or the other. If you are having a continuous problem you might also have a thrust issue, ie, not enough right thrust. Your stab should be straightened, the end measurement isn't as important as the issue of it not being level with the wings. If it looks like it's going to be a major issue to change it, I'd think real hard about getting another airframe, if you can. If you can't do that, fly it!!! I've flown more than one plane that wasn't assembled correctly and had a ball with them, they didn't fly as clean as I would have liked, but I had a ton of fun with them.

Hey Soloned! Welcome to the Giants! I would just fly the heck out of that plane. It shouldn't make much difference in the way it flys.(I've seen much worse) I wouldn't really mess with it unless I was going to fly pattern and is was a problem in the air. 50% |

Hi Nathan, Not sure what type of airframe the venus is, if the stab is glued in I would leave it as is. As Boulder said, if you pull to a vertical upline and at the end of the radius it is pointing straight up then the stabs OK. If you continue on the upline and you have to add right rudder then move your thrust line. A lot of the expensive models have a well set thrust line built in to the fire wall, the cheeper ones apear to figure they will only be flow by people that may not have the ability to either fly a straight line or not care to much about trimming. Sounds like a good exercise in trimming out your model, stick with it as the less you have to make up for the preformance the better you will fly. I fly pattern and it took me a while to get a good feel for what the plane was telling me. There are some good write ups on trimming, take a look at the scale aero's web site. Good luck and let us know how you go.

Soloned, Welcome to FG. Great site, good people from literally, everywhere. A great many of them are oldies (in the game) that know a lot about building and flying models. I think the best advice is to leave alone, trim it as you can without pulling it apart, have a ball with it until the Venus just becomes too small for your newly acquired abilities of flying well a not so good airframe. What's your location in Oz ? I used to llive in Cairns, but flew many years in Melbourne with DDARCS. |
