Question Is a GP 81" Cub considered a Flying Giant?

Hi everyone!

This is my first post on FG but I have been here to watch some of the live coverage at several major fly-in's this summer and have read some of the build threads.

I'm a 71 yr old man with time to be a kid again. After 35+ yrs out of the hobby I decided I would be exclusively electric this time around.

I am getting (now partly built and in my garage) a Great Planes Cloth Covered J3 81" WS Cub for Christmas.

I was building it for a friend who wanted me to set it up with an E-Flight Power 46 outrunner motor. When I had almost completed it he decidided he needed the $ he had invested in the plane, motor, servos etc. and sold it to me.

Since my wife and I are on retirement income we have limited funds for hobby related expenses so my wife said I could buy the Cub if it would be my Christmas present from her.

She dosen't want me to fly it till after Christmas since my old thumbs just caused the demise of my 6 Ft WS Telemaster Electro a few weeks ago. It WOULD be embarassing on Christmas day if someone asked what she got me for Christmas and I said it was in the garage in a big black trash bag

Since the Telemaster Electro I have fallen in love with large planes and it is a lot of fun to hear my flying buddies talk about how nice and quiet they are in the sky. The only noise from the Telemaster was the sound of the 13X8 APC Sport prop cutting through the air and the whistle of air over the wings.

I am considering other large 80+" WS planes in the future and wanted to know just what is considered a Flying Giant Plane.

Bill

Yep...thats what the giants are all about. It doesn't matter whether its a Cub or an extra, but just being in the hobby to have fun. Being 16, there is nothing more exciting to me than getting a new plane I have been waiting for. Im glad to hear that some things never change. Have fun with the Cub! And welcome to the Giants

Hey Bill,

It's great to have you join the family!!

First things first, you don't have to fly giant scale to be a Flying Giant!! All you do is take what you have, try some new things, have fun and fly safe!! That's it!!

As for a big Cub, heck yeah, fly that bad boy!!

Glad to have you back in the hobby, never too old

Welcome to the Giants!!!

Flying "Giant" is more about your attitude tword flying and friends than the size of the plane !!! Welcome aboard.

Great to have you here Bill! The guys couldn't have said it any better. A foamie is a Flying Giant, it's all about keeping the positive aspects of the hobby first in order of importance. The electric craze is really coming on strong. Seeing Chip and Bernd fly electric planes in the Don Lowe Masters was REALLY cool. To be honest, Bernd had more power than he knew what to do with. He had it backed down 20% so the UP lines wouldn't be too fast!

Welcome to the Giants! Happy to hear you've been a modeler for years and still have a fire in your belly for it! Enjoy my friend, Biff

Bill, welcome to the family. They have said it right, the Flying Giants is about the love of flying not the size of the aircraft. Sort of like "size doesn't matter, just how you use it."

As for Cubs, A lot of us have a soft spot for them. I have a 1/4 scale clipped wing on the bench right now. I got it from one of my flying buddies in the bones with some major damage. It is now covered working on the windscreen, and radio installation. When finished it will be a drop plane for RC skydivers.

As for what I fly, I have foamies, small glow, the cub will have an old 1.40 glow, and I have a 30% Yak with a 50cc gas engine.

Welcome back Bill. Being a Flying Giant is all about heart. Where do you fly in Barboursville? I am around there often and play golf at Sugarwood and Lavalette golf clubs. Hope to see you there!
